Free flight from Emirates
My brother who is on our tour of duty was due to fly from London to Bangkok last night on Emirates. He checked in and was waiting around, then a rep came up to him and started chatting. She asked his destination, and then got round to telling him they had overbooked the flight. Eventually, she asked politely if he could travel tomorrow, and suggested they would work out a deal if he was agreeable.
Well, it turns out they put him up in a hotel for the night, he's got to check in again today and they will put him on a flight today, and also they have given him a voucher for a free return flight to Bangkok for use in the next 12 months !!!! Jammy b@rst@rd.
He's pretty made up with this, a days delay for a free return flight is a good trade off imo.

I reckon he must be on his way now, his phones switched off. What a result, wonder if they'll do it for the phase 2 exodus on Tuesday when 8 more of us fly out. Heres hoping,

While your brother cashed in quite well, the bottom line is that is served the airline too.
Overbooking allows them to fill the plane even when there are cancellations and no-shows.
They are quite sophisticated in calculating the right number of over-bookings, which includes the need to pay off volunteers.
The big problem is when they have to deny boarding.
In the US the rules for denied boarding is 150% of full fare for the class of service, plus the replacement flight being free.
A few years ago I was in route from JFK to Stockholm on an over booked flight and the airline was scrambling to find volunteers. They ended up offering $1200 cash, plus an upgrade to business class the next day..... plus of cause, hotel and per diem vouchers. Too bad I never have time for these deals.

That happens all the time. Don't know how many times I got asked to stay for one night and take a next days's flight, all on their expenses, plus 500$ cash,
or a free flight valid for a year etc. (to Istanbul last time).
Bummer is, when you're on bizz trip, you gotta get there, no way around it.
I've seen people just waiting for this, jumping up and running to the desk to get their free night or whatever it is as soon it's announced...
.... guess it's a sport or hobby for some people;-)
Good on your Brother, free BKK trip is quite nice right

Many, many moon ago I was waiting for my flight in Oakland airport on Wednesday before Thanksgiving (the busiest travel day in the US).
I was having a beer and got talking with the guy next to me at the bar.
Turns out he had bought no less than 10+ full fare tickets for that afternoon.
He was playing the over-booked game.
If he could volunteer his seat he would get $200 - $400 after which he would cancel his full fare ticket for a full refund.
If no volunteers were need, he would just cancel his trip.
When I talked with him he had already cashed in $1000.

Agree, plus the airlines now are so much better at predicting cancellations and no-shows.
As far as I can gauge I hear an announcement asking for volunteers at most once every 30 or so flights only.
