Cathay Pacific
i know i have been touting this airline for years and people are probably bored hearing me but they are just head and shoulders above any airline, company for that matter, i have ever dealt with
i was flying out of NYC to Vancouver yesterday at 11pm
i wake up and have a missed call, so call Cathay back and they were just informing the flight will be delayed from 11pm to 1205am
i get to airport at 10pm instead of 9pm and there is a British Airways flight that is delayed for 4 hours and all the passengers up in arms
just that one little call from Cathay allowed me to take my time and arrive at airport at 10pm for a normal wait
do airlines often call you personally with flight delays??

Delta calls me when a flight is more than an hour late or if my connection fall below minimum (usually 30 minutes domestic).
Sometimes the call includes an offer to be rerouted at an earlier flight if I can make it to the airport on time.
I am also signed up for SMS notification and get a text message whenever the flight is delayed, even by a few minuted.

I would say Delta is always on time, but IMO the performance is pretty good. I take about 150 flights a year so facing the occasional delay is par for the course.
When it comes to the short haul flights the determination that a flight will be delayed is usually too close to departure time for the notification to make a difference.
Status may have something to do with the service, I don't know. I am at the highest level Delta offers.

all major domestic carriers here in NZ offer that same service and will even call again if there has been a further delay.....I don't see why that is so special Paulie....god it's only manners...and a way of reducing the chance of mightily pi$$ed off customers for their check in + ground staff..
Don't you call if you are gonna be late for an appointment?

I had once a delay sms from Singapore Airlines for a flight back to Amsterdam. It was only for a 30 minute delay, but nevertheless good service.

Delta has called me a number of times, to advise of a delayed departure.
I even remember once, they called me because it was approaching departure, and I hadn't checked in yet? 55555

Also, they've almost always held my connecting flights for me, when I've had a late arrival
I think Delta is the best.

I was on a Delta flight this evening and upon the completion of the flight the crew thanked the passengers for flying Northwest and Delta airlines.

The further up front you are the more this is true .... especially if your seat assignment is before row 1.

I used to fly BA regularly throughout Europe and was always sent an SMS regarding delays, cancellations etc. Those people "up in arms" either never had a handphone with them, or else did not register it with the airline when A). booking their ticket or B). when registering for the Executive Club FF programme.
As has been stated in outher replies, most airlines do it. I even had a text from Air Asia recently informing me of a 2 hour flight delay !!

If you can afford it book business class; most of the time their business class is overbooked from USA/Canada to HKG and they ask for volunteers to downgrade - the compensation can equal the cost of the flight. Mind you its a fair bit of dosh to pay up on the chance....
I do like Cathay, they always text me to let me know departure time and gate (in Hong Kong you can check in 24hrs in advance in Central or Kowloon, then just roll up at the airport with your hand luggage, passport and boarding card). Now they have revamped the business class layout I think its OK, I didn't like the old 8 degree seats they used to have. They are also very well organised when it comes to transfers in HKG; mind you HKG airport works like a fine tuned instrument, most of the time.

For my dates in October, business class is over 10,000USD, out of my range. Still In October I'm going to give them a try to Phuket. JFK-HKG via Vancouver and to HKT. My only concern is the last leg is with DragonAir, wonder if I can check my bags from JFK - HKT.

Yeah no problem the Dragonair flight is also a code share with CX, I think its CX8***. DragonAir is not the same as Cathay, by a long shot, but for a regional airline its not bad.

I just used the search function as I have a few questions about Cathay. I choose to post in this thread as the title is more general to Cathay as I not see answers to my questions.
My Thai flight JFK-BKK was canceled and I re-booked through LAX. It is not yet confirmed via email. I have thought a little about it and really am having second thoughts about this arrangement for the following reasons:
1. I have to fly across the country before I get on a 17 hour flight.
2. Flight across the country will be on some United plane and probably economy(ouch my legs!)
3. I get into BKK on Monday morning rather than Sunday night therefore eliminating my only night in BKK.
4. It is a fecking lot of flying.
I like the Cathay Schedule from Boston(from what I recall). My questions are:
1 How much leg room does economy have? It is very important to me.
2. How does the seat selection process go(upon booking)?
Thanks in advance!
