What's the best way around Phuket?
Good morning guys and girls...
Just a quick question - what's the best way to get around in Phuket? As you know from my last post I am staying down at Kata and will be wanting to spend a lot of time at Patong. What would the old hands suggest as the best way to get around while I am there - the people I am travelling with have suggested hiring scooters for the duration, but I am toying with the idea of hiring a driver for the week we are in Phuket. Is this a feasible option? How much is it likely to cost?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Feet. Tuk Tuk(negotiate well). of if you have experience in riding a motor bike that would work.

Last time I was in Phuket I was quoted 1000 baht, plus gas per day for a car and driver. In this case the guy had a relatively new Corolla.

agree with mrdk, but it depends if you just want to get up and go whenever you feel like it (motorbike hire) or can wait a bit for a taxi, i tend to use a taxi over a tuk-tuk as they are aircond and are the same price, just find a driver and get his tel no, tell him you will use him whenever you need a car and he will probably give you a good price, but make sure you are true to your word and only use him. i can give you the number of a driver i always use, always careful driving and will take you all over the island as a tour guide, pm me if you would like it, when are you going.

I`d say you need a high level of skill on a motorbike to safely negotiate the road from Kata to Patong regularly at night in the rainy season.
It rains for days on end sometimes and the roads become quite slippery.
Car has gotta be the way to go.

I flew back yesterday after 4 days in Chiang Mai and 5 days in Phuket. The taxi drivers in Phuket are now hiking up their prices, I was quoted 1,000baht just for 3 hours of driving around and this was from several different guys. When I tried to knock them down, they all said the same thing "Gasoline too expensive now".
Funny thing is, the prices are the same for gas in Chiang Mai, but the taxis, tuk-tuks etc are much cheaper.

The price I was quoted was exclusive of gas.
But I think there is little doubt that Phuket carries a premium in all respects.
