No trains to Phuket, you have to take it to Surat Thani and then buss to Phuket.

I have gone from Phuket to BKK by train(part-way), but you have to take a minibus to Surat Thani and then take the train to Phuket.
In my opinion, it is safer than flying, but quite time consuming.
Since they started the economy airlines(Orient Thai, Air Asia, Nok), you don't save much money by going the train/bus way. IIRC, it was about 800 or 1000 Baht for minibus to Surat Thani, and 350 or 400 for 2nd class sleeper to BKK, which is nice enough, or 800 for the first class, which is like a small private room with room service at meal times.
So that would be roughly 1200 to 1800 to go to BKK, which is some savings, but not a huge amount, since you can fly Orient Thai from Phuket to BKK for approx. 1600 to 1850 Baht. If you've got heavy luggage, then you would save more, since they charge a lot more for luggage over 22 kgs(18 kgs on Air Asia).

Plus approximately 900 baht per leg for surcharges and taxes. Baggage over 15kg is charged about 90 baht/kg, and there's now a 30 or 50 baht charge for each checked bag (depending upon whether you pay at the time of booking, or when checking in). Unless you hit one of their "10 baht" or "100 baht" promotions, the total Phuket <--> BKK fare is always between 1,600 and 2,000 baht.

A bit misleading JB. Whichever way you travel, between Surat Thani and Phuket, there is no train. I think you meant type, take the train to BKK.
Like Andmel, I am curious as to your thinking a minibus, driven by a Thai, on Thai roads, is safer than flying!!

How much would Bangers/Phuket/Patong set you back by for an A/C *bus* ?
Also any Bus service you chaps recommend that leaves BKK in the evening (say 7pm) and gets into phuket the next morning ?
