Motorbike Rental Requirement
Can anyone tell me what documentations are required to rent a motorbike in Phuket as well as the average rental rate? Is it relatively safe to drive in and around the island? Thank you.

They ask for your passport, so I gave it to them, but other BMs say not to do that. It doesn't make sense since you are supposed to have your passport with you at all times, though many keep it in the hotel safe. I think you can give them you r driver's license, instead.
Motorbike is usually 150 Baht per day, but some places get 200. Also you pay more for bigger or better bike.
It is relatively unsafe to drive in and around the island. You see girls and men with the whole family on a little bike and think that looks easy. But they know what to anticipate and the crazy way Thais drive and the unwritten rules of the road there all are known to them. Also many Thais do get in accidents. How many BGs have at least one scar or a chipped tooth from motorbike accident. Every one of them it seems like. Accidents are commonplace.

You can also try to give a copy of your passport. But I also think some rental operators still want the passport, so if there is damage to the bike then they dont give it back until you pay for the damage.
There is no insurance on rental motorbikes.

An international driver license is required. Although the most people ride a motobike don`t have any. It`s not save on the roads in phuket. In high season its about one people a day dies on phuket roads. So be careful. If you are involved in an accident mostly you have to pay. The most bikes are not insured.
I pay about 150 bath per day for a small motobike. Big Bikes make no sense in my eyes (the roads to small, the people drive reckless, often drunk).
In my days in phuket i saw few people die on the road. All ride motobikes.
On the other hand i always rent a small bike (Honda Wave or Dream) because you can go everywhere. (i don`t like tuk-tuks as well).

There are guest friendly hotels which do bike rental also , I checked with Swiss Villa in Soi sansabai and they charge 180 baht a day.
They also run Orchid residence (same soi) so i would think it's the same.
Lamai hotel & Lamai inn (opposite Christins massage) also do bike rental and so do others .
Another hotel i used before is Paripas mansion which rent for 150 baht per day.
The reason i mention this is because i find this the best solution as they keep your passport in the hotel safe anyway , then you don't have to fear it going missing or any scams involving passport thefts/copying.

As for safety , please drive slow and careful as they have a driving style of their own over there. Watch out for dogs about to cross the road , also thai's that pull out of junctions into your path without warning.
No indicators used by some and no lights on the bike at night.
Always drive with your headlamp on even in daytime and always wear the helmet as this is required by the police.
This is a good site for rental as it has some driving tips that you should read

The biggest problem with guys coming to Thailand for holiday and renting a motorbike to get around, is that quite frequently they have never riden a bike before in their lives. They then mix it up with the booze, and the big boys on the road, and the end results are not pretty. Have seen far too many really bad accidents both in Samui and Phuket, all involving farang and motorbikes. Just take it easy, and ride within your abilities. For me, have never been on a motorbike, and you'll never get me on either.

Thanks
Thanks for all the valuable advice and information. You all are a tremendous help for the unfamiliars. I've never been on a motobike nor taken proper training either but it's rather tempting to enjoy the freedom roaming the island and the money that can be saved from taking taxi.

I'm an experienced biker and it can be challenging
In the states I had a big bike and rode it all the time as I love motorcycles. I never had an accident. Here in Phuket I've had two and both were not my fault.
One night I go home with a friend that Geir knows and Nicke thinks she a cutie as well. She falls asleep after some athletic actvity it's 2:00am and she's been drinking black death and is shit faced but I'm not tired. My friend calls and I meet him at Safari disco, we party, around 6:00am I head back home and a car pulls out in front of me on Nanai Rd I swerve but have to lay it down and the bike and myself slide for quite a ways. My shirt is all torn on the back and my back is bleeding from scratches my knee and ankle are killing me and people come out and help me up ask me if i"m ok and the driver just takes off. I'm a little stunned but can drive the bike back ok and it's only a little scratch on the exaust. I shower get back in bed with her. Around 11:00am she wakes up and screams as she sees me the sheets are all bloody from my back and she asks what happended. I told her "Don't you remember you did this to me last night" she gets this blank expression on her face like she's trying to remember but then I tell her the truth. She's a little miffed that I went back out but I told her she fell asleep on me and it was still early. So she takes me to the hospital they clean the wounds and my hand still is a little sore as I write this. The other accident my nieghbor swerved over when we were passing each other and she grazed me and the same hand needed 4 stitches.
I've also ran over a cat that I previously posted about and I'm still sad about that.
But I drive everyday here and I believe if you go slow, take your time, don't drive drunk you are ok. I also don't have a International License I have been pulled over three times and everytime I show them my California Dl and they usually smile and say "California" and I go. But soon I want a Thai DL just because I think it would be cool to have one.

dont be sad about that only Women love cats. Men say they love cats, but when women aren't looking, men kick cats.

I thought we were talking about Motorcycles
ATV's don't count Jonny
It was kind of funny as I seem to have found the only mud hole on the course. The go carts were more fun.

I have one and it is very cool! Doin the exam is extremely funny, it will take you half a day, but to see the practicals is a good laugh, especially for the cars! Finally my dad (who came with me) understood why Thai people can't drive...they probably never learnt!

I have two Thai driver licenses, one for motorbike and one for car.
The easiest way is to obtain an international drivers license in your homecountry first, then you can use it to get Thai drivers license. Since last year new driver licenses is valid for 5 years. In the past I could only get for one year. You need a health statement from a doctor, copy of passport, notification of stay from immigration, copy of your international drivers license and photos.

How much did you pay for this motobike? I had only one time a 400 ccm honda, but would be interesting just to know how much a big bike nowadays is.
Thx
