khon kaen
really this message for gsdpot, but anyone else who can help.
as i posted a while back about maybe going to khon kaen at xmas,i am booking the flight tickets at the weekend,or at least a lbfm is for me as she will be travelling with me(and the difference in price between her booking and me is quite alarming).i will be going from 27-29 december,2 nights.should i have probs getting hotel room at that time of year there?or is it worth prebooking one?
also need a goodhotel, forgot one you pm me graham.
also a decent/but good priced restaurant where i can take about 10 people(2 farang and 8 thai) and have a good meal/drink and not spend an arm and a leg please.
thxs

There are plent of cheap places around so i think you will get something, I was with 2 issan girls in Khon kaen and after they spoke with a local we were in a hotel within minutes and only cost 300 for the night but i didn't actually see the name anywhere but it was like ground floor apartments.
I also think the flights even at xmas shouldn't be a problem as khon kaen isan't exactly a popular tourist destination.
As for prices to eat and drink, cheaper than bangkok and pattaya, your bg can ask the locals where is cheap but good

Steve, what airline are u booking? You should book your flight on airasia for you and your TGF. Flights over 24/25/26 DEC are 700-800 Baht. Same price for both passengers. To book you will need to find out what her Thai ID card number is. Last time i flew BKK - Khon Kaen on Air Asia the flight was full of lbfm (and a few boyfriends too). For a 50 minute flight why pay more.
The best hotel to stay at is The Sofitel and not too expensive. But plenty of 500 baht hotels all around the city centre which are quite acceptable.
As for restaurant, the people i met last time, took me to a place, it was a covered plastic chair restaurant down by a big lake near the city centre (within 5 mins drive) They loved it, service and food was good, and the price of the meal for 8-10 people was rediculously low. Sorry dont know the name but if you TGF is from KK she or someone else may know the place if u ask.

yes the girl is from khon kaen so she should no.
eric i have asked tukta to sort the flights out so i will let you know nearer the weekend, but she suggested she do it as she said it would be a lot cheaper than me doing it.
thai airways wanted 25,000 baht, but air asia will do it for about 5-6000 baht from phuket return.only problem is with air asia the flight times,it aint to clever there setup, means unless you want to travel at obscene times you end up having to have a night each way in bkk which i dont want.i will have my fun there b4 hitting phuket
i will let you no what transpires.

I can recommend the Sofitel as well and the restaurant going "into" the lake is the Bua Luang (phonetic! -it's a water flower). Throw some rice into the water and see the size of the fish in the lake! Also in the basement of the Sofitel is a German beerkeller(amongst others). The food is quite pricey but between something like 6pm and 8pm for about 250B you can drink as much as you like. The tricky bit is not to laugh at the sight of Thai people in lederhosen!

Looks like you have been given good advice, Sofi Hotel is the best hotel in Khon Kaen, I think ThomYam says you can get a room for 1000 baht per night. The hotel I have lways stayed is called Pi Pi Hotel, centrally located & clean with the usual facilities. Expect to pay no more than 500baht per night for room. I have never had to book before!!! I suspect high season only related to big tourist destinations, Im guessing here but I doubt too many people regard christmas and new year in Khon Kaen as being a major issue regarding influx of tourists
Hope this helps G
ps only point to note lots of farangs may travel to Khon Kaen which may cause flights to be full and influence price, i.e. your Thai Airways price, should be no more than 1800 baht per person one way. But I reckon most farangs will be heading off to their GF villages or their own houses outside Khon Kaen.
You will get quite a surprise at the volume of farangs at Khon Kaen airport, it has risen quite dramatically in the last year

Forgot to mention about restaurants, dont worry the price of a meal is a fraction of the price compared to Phuket. Myself GF & friends (10 of us in total) stopped off at a very good restaurant near Khon Kaen, drinks and banquet of food came to lesss than 2000 baht. You will find heaps of choice in Khon Kaen itself, so dont worry about this
