The bus goes from anywhere on the beach road in Patong to the Thai Airways office in Phuket town. Only 20 Baht. It is a 10 minute walk or so to Robinson's and Ocean.(Ask for directions or get a tuk tuk)
Things can be got cheaper, but it all depends on you bargaining power. If you are after fake T shirts / DVD's etc, then I wouldn't bother going, just buy them on the beach road in patong. Offer your price, if they don't accept, move to the next stall and try again. If you have offered a reasonable price they will let you walk away a little bit and then call you back with "OK". Phuket town is a sparawly place, and does not have that much to offer. Try Central - not cheap, but a nice mall (same bus, just get off when you see it.) or Tesco Lotus or Big C (for clothes, electrics, food, etc) - they are all in the same area. I would say a 10 minute (hot) walk from Central to Lotus, 5 minutes to Big C. Use the bridge to cross the road, or you will end up being a pancake. If you are really wanting cheap - go to Super Cheap. Bus into Phuket town, and then one to the North (Airport / Surin / Nai Yang) and get of a couple of miles past the Land Rover / BMW / Mercedes showrooms (On Thepkrassatri Raod). You can get loads of stuff there really cheap. Beware, it is really hot inside (No Aircon or fans), can be very smelly (dried seafood and durian fruit) enough to make you sick, and the check out can take a hell of a long time. (They count and check every item after checkout and before you leave the premesis). However, I am sure it is not worth the hassle of saving a Baht or two!
