Suitable Accommodation – Seaview+Guest friendly
Can anyone advise a suitable place to stay that meets the following criteria?
In the order of importance:
· Guest friendly
· Sea view balcony
· 3 star rating
· Around 1,000 baht per night during low season
· Within 10 to 15 minutes walking distance from Bangla Road or less than 50 baht tuk tuk ride for 1 person
· Medium size swimming pool
· Quiet area
I’ve stayed at the Kamala Bay Terrance Resort before which would be perfect except every time I went to Patong Beach cost me 200 baht taxi ride and it’s sort of a family place. The Stoney Monday was alright too but it has no sea view.
If it’s in Karon but fits my budget with the tuk tuk fee included would probably do too.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Riley's Guesthouse and Restaurant
I am looking for something very similar and so far have only really seen the Patong Villa and the Salathai resorts as fitting the bill.
However, if you are flexible on the sea view, then this has taken my eye but I have not found out a lot about it yet.
www.phuketdir.com/rileysguest/index.htm
The rooms look OK, and if that is the swimming pool in the picture, then that too seems OK. It's a very short walk from Bangla Road, so no rip-off tuk-tuks (I would be very surprised if you managed to get a ride for 50baht regularly !!). I have sent n email to them asking for more information, but of course they will not say anything bad about their own place !!
Does anyone know about this place ?? Are the pictures to be believed, especially the swimming pool ??
Thanks
Diz

The Salathai resort is great but they will charge a joiner fee if you bring a different girl back each night. They were very good with the girl I checked in with though.

I stayed at Salathai in November for a week and brought home a different BG every night, and was never charged anything.

It's funny this, because they told me when I looked at the room that there is a joiner fee, and they told me the same thing at the C&N. It was busy and they were down to the last couple of rooms in both places, maybe that has something to do with it?
I think if I was staying at either of these places now I would e-mail them first and ask the question because the goalposts seem to be moving around a little.

I know, but please don't think that I am not telling the truth here!
I first went to Patong in 1997 and stayed at the C&N. I have been there a time or two since and have stayed in various places. Last time out, August 2004, I had booked the Expat and found that the girls did not want to stay there as a guy had topped himself in one of the rooms.
I found myself doing the rounds and the C&N was one of my first ports of call. Why on earth would I say that they wanted a joiner fee if they did not? I speak pretty good English, being English, and they told me, in English, that if I bring a girl back they will charge me. Same at the Salathai.
I am sure they have their reasons, and I am sure that everyone here who says that they have not been charged is telling it as it is, but the fact is that when I was looking for accommodation last August that is what happened.

None of us think you're not telling the truth. It sounded like a misunderstanding, but now you have me worried. I'm scheduled to stay at Salathai on March 1st and it it too late to cancel without a big cancelation fee. Maybe they think you mean a party of 2 staying in the room for the entire time. Most hotels charge a more when couples stay in a room, rather than a single person.

All the posts here say C&N does not charge, so that info is clearly up to date but not what they told me last August.
When I looked at the Salathai I had a girl with me. The receptionist, a Thai bloke with very good English, showed me a room. I said 'will you charge me extra if my girlfriend stays?' He said 'if she checks in with you no problem, but if you bring a different lady home every night we charge 350 baht'
I run a website myself and was looking for info on hotels to update it at the time so was being careful about what was said. At the time, most of the hotels in Patong seemed busy, and maybe they just did not want any party animals staying with them that week, but I checked out quite a few and got pretty much the same story.
It seems typical Thailand to me, things are never the same for long. I had a good stay at the Salathai, it's a top place but as I said before, I would e-mail them before I went and ask the question. That said tho, there was a post on this thread with a guy staying there and no joiner fee, so that would give me some confidence too.

Joiner Fees
This is the case when I stayed at Salathai they don't like to encourage to much sanuk but same girl everynight no problem.
C & N on the other hand is quite the opposite you must be the only person I've ever heard of paying a joiner fee, you can bring 3 or 4 girls in one night no problem.
I'm not doubting that you paid but it does seem a little strange maybe someone was a bit short on food money that week.

I emailed Salathai to confirm their policy. Have not heard back yet, but will post when I do. Regardless of what they say though, they may not actually charge once I'm there. They may state a joiner fee to discourage too many butterflies. When I was there in November, I do recall other punters with their gf's, but dont' recall whether they were new ones every night. Will update also when I get there in 2 weeks.

I have not stayed at either, but am under the impression that the Hotel is girl-friendly whereas the Resort isn't. This is an assumption based on comments from this forum.

The hotel; maybe they just did not like the look of me? No idea why because I am a lovely bloke..
I would use both of these places again tho, good hotels.

I emailed the Salathai a few days ago asking about their guest policy and stating that I would change hotels if they insisted on charging a joiner fee for guests even though I had booked a single room. Here is their response.
Subject: Re: Rate / Reservation Inquiry [RRI-SLT-175515]
Dear Mr. Steve Scott,
Thank you for your mail again.
we have confirmed we do not have additional charge if you make
reservation
for single room.
Should you have any further question please do not hesitate to contact
us
again.
Best regards,
Salathai RSVN.
My last stay there was very pleasant. There is some music from Seapearl across the street, but it ends at 1am, and was pretty muted in my room.

Cool, I was going to do that myself and that clears up the question of joiner fees at the Salathai. I really liked the hotel, the staff, restaurant and pool were great, so I will stay there again next time I go.
An e-mail before your trip settles the question of room rates and I will do this every time now.

It is pretty nice, and it's a good location, but I dont' think I'll stay there again. They have a very draconian cancelation policy. If you don't give them 30 days notice, they charge you 20% of the total bill. You can't even change 1 day without a charge. I also was not real impressed with the friendliness of the reception staff. If I wasn't already booked I would have stayed at the Hilltop Hotel. The only problem with it is the location. It's not really within walking distance of Bangla, however there are tuk tuks everywhere, and I found myself using them even from the Salathai because I'm a lazy bastard.

Thanks for the update; i think I will e-mail a few hotels and ask the question. My guess is that none of them will want to charge now as they are all wanting the business.
I will be out there later in the year though, and the picture may be different then so I will check.

Aloha Villa charges 300 baht joiner fee but if u book double room no problems.
Stayed there last 3 trips, rooms good size, clean with all you need considering how much time I spent in room.
Last time booked in with gf,one day she went back to hotel in afternoion on her own and reception staff started harassing her as to who she was staying with and wouldnt give her the room key.She phoned me ,i spoke to general manager and received two free nights accomodation and dinner vouchers as compensation for hassle caused.
All in all good hotel and only 1/2 mins staggering distance from Tiger complex
