Internet connection from the hotel room

Hi technology-oriented BMs,
this subforum is called as Accommodation,Transportation... maybe it is time to rename it as Accommodation, Transportation, Telecommunication

Just found some interesting threads here concerning broadband (is it about 256 kB/s to X MB/sec ?) Internet connection from/to the hotel room.

Indeed, personally I would like to have WiFi connection from my hotel room (802.11 b standard 11 MB/sec, or alternatively 802.11g), but this still remain to wishful thinking in most hotels in Northern Europe and even in Scandinavian countries, what are really advanced in such technology implementation.

But, please share Your experience - can I buy some pre-paid card and dial-up from hotel room some local ISP number?
Then I should pay local phone minute fee according to hotel's pricing policy, and some additional charge to local ISP.

Is that possible in Phuket?

I know that in Phuket, LOS should be the best to forget about your laptop, e-mail address etc, but my current job does not leave for me such a possibility.
So I need to work out for myself some kind of network connection possibility - and GSM Data is definitely out of sight due unbeliveable costs from LOS to Estonia

Please share here Your current experience about Internet connection possibilities from Karon Beach ,

Baltic

Hi Werwolf!
As we still is in the buildingphase it's difficult to say how much the rooms vill cost!
As soon we now we will update our site!
About renting a laptop! Haven't thought about that yet....!
Maybee if there is a big demand for it! Was more thinking about wireless usb adapters to attached to your own computer!
Or have simple machines permanent in the room! Don't cost much more than a TV!

I think nobody - or only a few - will take there laptop to Los. So it is a good if somebody can rent a laptop. The best is of course a permanent machine in the room!!! I think that have not so much hotels in Los.

I too won't travel without my laptop. Laptops are getting pretty cheap now too. My brother just got a nice Gateway for $699.
I think the Hilltop Hotel has DSL in all the rooms. Check the website.
Salathai has an internet corner.

Depends on if its metered or not..

A wireless hotspot can be run many ways.. open / encrypted / metered.. All down to the provider..

With starbucks you have to buy a card and its for some period of time (metered).. With closed but unmetered you simply get the wep key and enter it into your wireless drivers.. With open you just plug in card and go..

Most hotels I find use the encryted but unmetered version.. Street style hotspots range from metered and pay by minute or hour or the same..

A note to everyone to make sure you ask if WEP is enabled or some other reliable form of encryption as WIRELESS networks are so easy to hack.

A wireless network is no easier to hack than any other open network you have access too, thats a popular misconception.. The issue is without a WEP key the network is open but so what ?? I treat my own machine as the last safe point and anything I send unencrypted from my machines over public internet is then open...

Email is the equivalent of a postcard..
