One for the Aussies
Hey guys I wonder if you all have the same problem? I am coming back to Phuket in July and I am finding that the cheapest way over there is on a package as even with single supp it is still cheaper than a scheduled fare.
While this is OK it severely limits the choice of hotel as the agents only deal with a certain number of places. Has anyone managed to overcome this problem? I would be obliged to hear of any alternatives. Thanks!

beware the joiner fee if you are not bring company with you.
if you list hotels here BMs will probaly be able to tell you which charge to have "friends" stay with you.
you might be better off to book airline seperate and try this link for hotels
http://www.phuket-info.com/hotel/phuket/index.php
myslf going in march $1100 airfare and $35 per night hotel
airfare and acc should be cheaper in july

My 2 bobs worth
I always travel single, every time I have investigated the great special prices it has never worked out cheaper than getting it separate, airfare and accommodation. Reason is that the prices quoted are twin share, for 2 people, so when you travel alone you have to pay the extra for the room. Do your sums and if you can get it cheaper than the airfare put up with their hotel for the 2 or 3 days and then pick your own accommodation after that. That is also where they get you back if you stay extra nights you can pay to much. These deals are great if there are two of you eg with gf. I don’t share rooms with mates myself.
If the flight is direct Oz to Phuket you will save an airfare from Bkk and return so I suggest include these in your sums. NOK Air is the cheapest that I could find booked tonight 1,550 baht with taxes (I hope with taxes).
For cheap air fares international try http://www.zuji.com/zuji/home/0,,ZUJIAU,00.html but they do not list the cheap asian airlines, Phuket AIR, NOK air Air Asia etc, find them on Google.
Hope this is of help,
Three fargin days for me, hey hey

I know a few people who work in the airline industry and I am told Nok Air is not the safest way to travel. They have old unserviced aircraft. I don't want to alarm anyone as this is second hand. Make your own decisions.

It costs just 680baht for a double room on this site. Price valid Feb through to October. That works out around aud22 a day.
I find that this website "directrooms" is usually one of the cheapest and is well worth keeping as a short-cut on your browser for any future holidays.
Good luck
Diz

Flights
For regular visitors to Thailand. Buy a 1 way ticket from you home land. Then buy an open ended return ticket from Thailand. Best move I have made. $800AUD compared with $1500 if brought in Australia.
And value for money hotels in patong..Tatum Mansion in Soi Kepsup. Many different rooms and prices but cheap as far as rooms in Patong goes.

I have just got back I stayed their for 6 nights. Hotel is clean, big bed, room clean. Not sure about breakfast as never up early enough. Pool ok. I would stay again.
I paid $1152 from Perth for six nights so price seems good.
Joiner charge of 300baht per guest per night.
It takes between 5 & 10 minutes to walk to Bangla Rd. It didn't bother me but some people don't like to walk. Or 20 baht motor bike if you are to lazy to walk.
I hope this helps
Cheers
Brett

Be aware that in Oz if your travelling out of the country on the return leg of a ticket purchased outside of Oz, then you will be required to show an onward ticket out of the country you are travelling to, unless of course you have a visa allowing you to stay in that country.

What you have said little nose is dead right... But the best way around it is book the package deal for the cheapest hotel on offer for 4 nights and then self arrangements. Just go online and book your own hotel...You do not even have to go near the horror you booked on the cheap.
Shame you are not in Perth... They have some awsome prices for Stoney Monday Oasis Hotel from April 1st on for the low season. Real Rippers for Aussies as the Owner is an Aussie

The prices are not that good when you compare them to C&N for instance, You can get a room there for 800bt and its only a stones throw away from bangla where as stoney is about a 15-20min walk away at least, Also when you take into consideration how much you will end up spending on tuk-tuks everyday, All them 100bt's start to add up, Well for me in anyway because I wont use the motorbike taxis myself, I just dont trust them because I think there too dangerous but even if you dont have that problem, All them 20-40bts add up also....

When I first came to patong, I booked the least expensive package (infamous Vises). On the second day I looked around for a nice place to stay, girlfriendly, for about 600 Baht including B/F. Since Vises asked for 400 Baht joiners fee, I now had a second room for free. You may as well select your hotel in advance at www.latestays.com. They have good offers for 2 weeks in advance.
