patong to kanchanaburi

I am thinking of doing a bit of a road trip on my next tour (arrive sunday 6th march for 3 weeks) I would like to take a bus trip from Patong to Kanchanaburi.
Is this a good idea? I haven't seen much of the Thai countryside and I thought this may be a good way to do it. Also don't mind stopping off along the way. After Kanchanburi will head on to Bangkok to visit Thai G/Fs family.
I will be travelling with Thai G/F. I am not interested in hireing a car as I don't particularly like driving and my G/F drives like a maniac (or a Thai).

Steve.

We took a taxi (honestly) from Patong to Bangkok in 1999 and it took around nine hours. I know the idea of a road trip is cool but really, when you get out into the boonies, there is not a great deal to see.

Of course, there is also the fact that Thais seem to drive like blind English women so the roads are not the safest. And the bus drivers put more faith in Buddha than mechanics, which I am not entirely comfortable with either.
