Cathay Pacific ...
is running some excellent specials from the US (West Coast). I was wondering if they are a safe and reliable airlines. I only heard of them through a chance mention in one of the posts on this board. At that time, January 2005, thye were offering a limited time $558 LA to BKK flight. Very hard to beat on price. The current offer is a "all Asia" ticket for about $1000. Again from the west coast, but can have multiple flights to anywhere in their network for 21 days.
Has anyone had experience with this airline? Are they on the up and up? How is the leg room? I am over 6 foot tall and need leg room on those 24 hour flights.

Cathay Pacific (CX) is based and listed in Hong Kong. With it, Hong Kong has been the major transport hub in Asia in terms of air travel. Though CX is a Hong Kong company, no pilot is chinese but mostly british. CX is basically owned by Swire Group (a UK Giant). It has good safety record and clean. All planes are new (they never buy second hand ones like those budget airlines. But to me, it is always expensive when compared to other airlines. If leg rooms are important to you, I suggest you to reconsider as I often find it inadequate. Perhaps I mostly used those short distance flights around Asia, and most Asians are not that tall and built-up. Do some research or send a mail and ask them. One thing I want to mention here is that unlike American or European airlines, all flight attendents are young and pretty in CX, same as Thai and Singaporean Airlines. For CX, generally if you are over 40, you have to join the ground team instead of going in the air.

I flew Cathay Pacific in 2002 and will never go near them again. We were facing a 13 hour flight to Heathrow and they kept us on the tarmac, at the stand, in Hong Kong for 3 hours. Worst flight of my life.
Of course there are reasons, but none good enough. I also realise that it makes me a sour little dummy spitter, but never, ever again will they get my money.

I flew Cathay last November and it was a good experience. I will fly again in 1 week. I have a 16.5 hour flight from New York to Hong Kong this time, then 3 more hours to Bangkok, not sure how fun that will be.
I liked Cathay because they were the cheapest for me with their Deal of the Month, and I liked the food. I feel just as safe flying with them as any other major airline.

Yup, I'll probably fly that later this year. Its a little more expensive, but I think it will shave off about 3 hours of the flight. To me that would be worth it I think, these flights are ridiculously long as it is.

Bono, that is unbelievably cheap! It costs about the same amount to go to BKK from the Middle East with Gulf Air or Emirates!
The Thai flight must have loads of strings attached! Like you can only fly on a Tuesday when there's an R in the month.

my view on Cathay
I just flew with them from Amsterdam to Hong Kong and from Hong Kong to Bkk and back via Hongkong to Amsterdam.
Inflight service is very good according to me. Pitty that we were not allowed because of the cheap tickets to visit Hong Kong for two days.
On the day we left from Amsterdam on 02/03 there was very heavy snowfall and we had to wait for 3 hours in the airplane because of de-icing. But in Bkk I spoke to a dutch girl who flew China Airlines and they had to wait for 8 hours in the plane before take-off. So I consider we were still quite lucky.
The leg space in econmy class is indeed not adequate for people of 1.80 mtr and up.
Inflight service is very good and every passenger has his/her own television screen with top movies and famous television shows and computer games.
I would reconsider using them again also because of the good price of 650 Euro.

I used 135K American Airlines miles to fly Cathay Pacific to BKK last year in first class. It was the best flights of my liife. Flat beds, caviar, $100 bottles of wine, great lounge in HKG. If you have a lot of AA miles to burn it would be worth it. Biz class is 110K.
