I have done Phuket to Bangkok by car (taxi!) and it can be done in around ten hours.

In all honesty, there was not a great deal to see. Thailand seems like a big country and a lot of it is empty. I guess if you went via Cha Am and Hua Hin it could be a nice trip.

Do it! I drove once from Phuket to Bangkok. Lots to see and do on the way if you are willing to discover. National Parks, cities like Pet(cha)buri etc. Just buy a good travel book and you and your girl will have some very nice days.

You'll need to check if the rental companies will allow one way rentals. I believe at one stage they weren't.

Hello Steve,

That's an interesting idea. Can you tell us how much it cost and whether the driver minded stopping along the way?

If two or three guys (with luggage) could share the taxi, it could be well worth the time and money to see so much of the country.

Maybe for a consideration, the driver could be persuaded to make a bit of a tour out of it and spend a night out along the way.

Did this in April - before Songkran - and unless your TG really travels well (most don't) then advise against it. Road is pretty monotonous - generally good - you can drive 110-150km/hr and took 9 hours. It's actually cheaper to fly and negoitiating traffic in Bangkok is not for the faint hearted. As far as things to see en-route the National Park (Khao Mok) on Rte 401 between Takua Pa and Surat Thani is nice - probably better as an over night trip. Hua Hin and Cha Am near Bangkok are high end resort beach towns - nothing special over anything in Phuket (night life in Hun Hin abismally dull).

We drove to Chaing Rai then Chaing Mai for Songkran and the roads between BKK and the north are very good but very dull. I'd never do it again and would point out that it was completly dry the whole journey. Now is wet season (until August) so that adds another dimension to both time and saftey.

If you decide to do it - good luck and hope your TG forgives you!

NB Many (perhaps could say most women I've known for lengthy trips abhor sitting for long periods and will accelarate the time by sleeping!)

Hi Mate; it cost us 10,000baht but that was at Songkran. I have had a meter taxi in Bangkok for the day to run around and then take us to Nakhonsawan (4 hours north) for 1500baht.

I would think that you could negotiate for 10,000 for a couple of days, which does not seem like a huge sum to me and it is good to see the country.
