If your connecting flight was on Thai then you would just transit in Bangkok and clear formalities up north.

If your connecting to Thai domestic flights to Phuket, Chiang Mai, Haad Yai, and there is one more that I cant think of right now, then you just make your way down stairs to gates 1 to 7. You get a bus from the International terminal direct to the steps of your aircraft.

I would have thought your suitcase could go all the way to Chiang Mai. It would save a long walk with it. I've certainly done UK-Bkk- HKT and picked up my suitcase at Phuket(or not if KLM are involved!!).

There are 4 domestic destinations in Thailand (see my post above), where you can clear immigration and customs there and not in Bangkok.

All other domestic destinations, you need to clear immigration and customs in Bangkok, which means collecting your bags I assume, although I've never done it.

As I said earlier, I can only assume they use buses to connect transfer passengers between the 2 terminals, otherwise passengers would have to go through Immigration etc.
Hi Diz
you dont go to the Domestic terminal. You drive with the bus from the International terminal direct to the airplane. Than you go into the plane to the rear door.
The Imigration will done than in HKT.
In BKK you get a sticker and in HKT the staff direct you to the Imigration desk.

there is 1 passenger on a flight due in from Amsterdam
there are 5 passengers on a flight due in from Singapore

there are 3 passengers on a flight due in from Melbourne

and they are all flying with Thai Airways and they are all catching the same Thai Airways flight to Phuket at 14:30. Where do these people go ? I can understand a bus taking you from one part of the airport to the plane, but how can the airport keep a control on the passengers ? There must be some sort of "holding area" then, either in the Internationals terminal or else the Domestic terminal. I can't see any airport just bussing the passengers direct from their arriving plane/gate straight to an aircraft waiting to fly out to Phuket, not even the Thais !! 55555

I dont know about Thai Airways, But on my first trip to Los I had a connecting flight to Phuket with Bkk Airways, And bypassed Imigration until I got to Phuket, I dont remember exactly how we done it but we ended up in a different Bkk Airways waiting room and from there we got a bus straight to the plane, So I guess it would be the same for every Airline.

Hi Diz
perhaps I do not understand what you mean.
All passengers from the flights from the differnt countries go to the gate 7. This gate is in the International terminal. They dont have to go to the domestic terminal. And they dont go through the imigration in BKK.

I did hear the same. The present Airport then is only a domestic airport. The new will open at the 29th September (if I had heard right)

Current advice DO NOT CLEAR CUSTOMS IN PHUKET..

They have just installed facial recognician computers and the idiots dont know what the hell they are doing with the computers.. I spent 50 mins to clear customs back from Singapore on a half empty A380 and I was not last off the plane by any stretch...

you could just see all the immigration officers not knowing which button to press or what to do any time anything unusual happened.. Then they ask the guy in the next queue (who also doesnt know) and the other queue also stops while they confer.. Was taking 2 - 3 mins per person at times and only 4 lanes in operation..

I dread to think what happens when international direct flights with high volume arrives.. >1 hour wait times after a long flight are a royal PITA..
