Angry flight prices up

I have just had a callfrom my travel agent saying i have to pay my flights in full before monday th 25th july or pay approx £60 per person extra. we are not traveling to phuket untill christmas day 2005. this is emerats air who are asking for the payment upfront, my agent tells me the airlines are doing this on a daily basis.
when i went to the travel agent i asked about my flights and was told i have a five hour wait in bangkok because all the other flights are full, phuket air and tg.

markh,
Regarding flights BKK / HKT being full, I reckon your agent is bullshi--ing you.
Go into Thai Airways site. You'll find there is availability on all flights throughout the day. I've just checked it myself as I'm travelling the same day.

Flights maybe still showing availability, but maybe not in the specific fare class he is booked in.

speaking of flight class, does anyone know why there are different class fares on the same flight? why is the person sitting next to you paid a different price for his/her ticket?

They are paying a different fare for the following reasons.

1) They booked before or after you did and the price was based on seats remaining on the aircraft. Most of the times, but not all, the sooner you book the better. Prices usually go up as the plane fills up.

2) They have a fully refundable ticket, which will cost them more but allow them to cancel their flight and get their money back anytime until they travel.

3) They are on a bulk fare, where the ticket prices are usually locked in on a contracted fare with the airlines and do not have to be ticketed immediately. These are usually pretty good deals and the benefit is that they did not have to pay for their ticket in full when they made their reservation. The only problem with this fare is that most airlines are now adding fuel surcharges and those will kick up the ticket price. This is probably what is happening to Mark H.

4) They were lucky enough to get a seat on a promotional fare.

For Mark H. When you book a bulk fare ticket with someone, in your case UAE, they will have add ons with other airlines to get you either from where you live to your main international airport, or from your primary international arrival airport(BKK) to your secondary destination(Phuket). The addon contract that UAE has with Thai Air has to be in a certain class of service for them to use the Thai Air flight and then get their add-on fare, which is probably better than the published fare BKK to Phuket. In your home country, the benefit is that they have luggage agreements between the carriers and will check your bags through from one airline to the other.

Hope this helps a little. The airline industry is still in turmoil due to 9/11, the tsunami, fluctuating gas prices, and lots of other things. In the US I can actually fly to Bankok or Manila from LA for less than I can go from LA to parts of the Caribbean at times.

Lots of international carriers like THAI Air and UAE are subsidised or owned by that countries government and try to keep down fares to increase tourism. With UAE you stop in Dubai, which has a great duty free market from what I understand, so you might buy something and spend money to support UAE economy on way back from Thailand.

Airlines have whole departments full of people and complexed software just to do yield management, to determine the best mix of cheapie and full fare to ensure a profitable flight.

For instance lets say the cheapie fare on Airline X from A to B is class W and sells at $100. There are probably only 10 seats of out say 300+ available at this fare, and once the 10 have been sold, the next cheapest fare class which maybe X is then sold. Each fare class also have different conditions, like cancellations and refunds.

Change your travel agent!

Sounds like a bit of a scam there Mark,

Might be worth your while doing the booking yourself over t'internet! That's what they call it in your neck of the woods in't it? I'm from Rochdale mate so get the same hassles.

I am booking from Baghdad so have to use my credit card and don't pick up my tickets until Amman, Jordan. (Then Dubai - Kuala Lumpur - Phuket) Most expensive flight is the Baghdad - Jordan at $570 one way for a 50 minute flight (Take it or leave it) Beats the hell out of a 19 hour drive though, especially out here.

The advice about booking as early as possible is good advice, it does get progressively more expensive as the plane fills up. If you book British Airways (and yes, it can be cheap enough if booked early enough) you get to play with the little man icon (You!) and move yourself around the aircraft until you find a seat you want. Kept me amused for hours.........and hours!...................Anyway.............Moving on.

Gazillions of flights out of BKK into Phuket, never had to wait for more than 3 flights before getting a seat. Failing that, have a stopover in Bangkok and make it part of your holiday. Choose your taxi wisely and he will sort you out with a hotel and be your bestest friend for a couple of days, sell you some of his brothers 'genuine-fake' watches (The Breitlings are good this year) and even insist that he to takes you back for your confirmed flight! Aren't Bangkok taxi drivers brilliant?

I am thinking of starting a thread about "The scams I have used to get a cheap upgrade" Some of the things people have tried are bloody amazing! I always have a crepe bandage in my hand luggage, wack it on in the toilet, limp to check-in - "knee operation Miss, I need the leg room"- a big doleful look and a cheeky grin, yer never know!

Have a great Christmas in the LOS Mark, be good, if not be good at being bad

I dont think so, I got a call from my travel agents aswell, And they told me that I had to pay the remainder of my flights before the 15th because after that date, The tickets will go up due to a fuel surcharge of E50.

And this is with Thai Airways, So maybe thats the reason for him also

PS: I also leave around Christmas time.

I reckon it's always worth paying for the flight as soon as you can, after - or even at the time of - booking. Even if the flight is still many months in the future. I've never known an instance when the price went DOWN as the flight date got nearer!

You have to be joking Paddy.
Many prices come down closer to the time if there not selling the seats.
4 weeks ago when I booked my flights for August, I tried several avenues for TG. to HKT.
Couldn't get a flight for less than £776.00. so I booked with Etihad as I wanted to ensure I got a flight leaving 12th. Aug.
Last week out of curiosity i checked he same sources and came up with offers as low as £560.00 with a selection of flight times.
I could kick myself now for not waiting as i normally would. Still, that's life.
At least with Etihad i stop in Abu Dhabi which is a good place to buy watches & gold jewelry.

Etihad are excellent. Paid £432 return including taxes and went with them in June from Gatwick. They use new Airbuses with entertainment systems in seatbacks. Multinational crews very good to. Couldn't fault them really and the 2 hour changeover in Abu Dhabi wasn't a hardship and gave a nice chance to stretch the old legs.

To be honest I now hate the nonstop 12 hour flights and prefer the ones that go via the Gulf :-)

Last few trips booked through bridgetheworld.com Recommended.

I took the same flight as you landofsmiles in March and agree the stopover is a welcome relief to stretch the legs. Unfortunately the return trip has a far longer stopover and its a pain to wait in Abu Dhabi Airport for too long.
I stayed two days to avoid the long delay and was out drinking beer instead of waiting in the airport

That's interesting Ali. But I think your case had to be an exception - I still reckon the rule is nine times out of ten the other way around!

Tell you what, though - I've already bought two tickets for my son and his bride-to-be, to fly Etihad from Heathrow to Abu Dhabi for their honeymoon in December. Off the top of my head, I can't even remember what I paid for them, but I'll have a look. Then I'll make sure to check the price each month and see if it goes up or down, and post any changes on the forum.

One last thing about Etihad flights to BKK via AD - they don't have a Business Class section but they have a thing called Coral Plus. It has all the Business Class benefits - fast track check-in and baggage reclaim, executive lounge at the airport, limo to and from the airport, seating section up the front, better food and drink. The only thing it doesn't have is a big, reclining Business Class seat, although it's still fairly comfortable and it's bigger than the regular one. It costs a bit more than Economy, but a lot less than Business. If you've got a few bob to spare, I reckon it's well worth paying the bit extra!

Etihad

Just out of interest. I got back last week after flying Etihad.
I must say I was impressed with them. From check in to flight staff, food etc, everything was excellent. Very efficient.
I would definitely use them again.

How long were the stop-overs, considered flying with them before but they did not fit in with my timings. Any info would be appreciated.

PS. Are they "dry" like Saudia, or more like emirates.

Hi faulty

Etihad fly from both LHR &LGW via Abu Dhabi. The LGW am flight arrives in AUH at 7 45pm and leavews for BKK one hr later. Perfect to stretch the legs, have a smoke, visit duty free(one of the best and cheapest worldwide). The flight arrives in BKK around 6 30am if I remember and thats just right to have a look around and catch ThaiAir 9 10am to HKT.
Not sure about the return trip layover as I stayed in AUH for a few days on my return.
They do actually have a timetable on their website which you should be able to work out the turn round time.

Plenty of alcohol on board, all UAE flights serve alcohol
