Many hotels can do 'internet' via dial up.. Scratch cards for dial up use are very cheap here (say 5 USd for 14 days unlimited) and easy to buy.. Having an IDD phone in the room and it not being a digital PABX makes this ok..
If you mean wireless or real network ports with broadband the pickings get a lot slimmer.. I am assuming some do but I am not up on them..
Another option is to get a GPRS phone and use laptop + mobile.. I think GPRS was 1 baht per min last time I checked and while not fast or that reliable (need to reset reconnect every so often) its ok for email and basics..
Also even with the best kind of connections expect downtime.. Thailand simply does not seem able to maintain a reliable connection with good uptime.. Swamped DNS servers, slow proxies, etc all are a pain in the ass..

That's not good news. It's one of the things holding me back from ever relocating to LOS. I need phat pipes for video up/download.

Even the better connections seem to drop off..
Corp / biz accounts and costs I dont know.. Nicke uses a JI net package that should be a fair bit more reliable than my cheapo 1000 baht one.. How often you get drop outs Nivke ?? what kind of speeds you adverage from the 512/256 you had ??
Do you work with video ?? I am a MS MVP and used to do a fair bit of testing of their WMVHD codecs etc..

It is pretty reliable, once in a while (maybe 2 times a week) nothing happens on the network and restarting the router dont help, but it used to be back in operation after maybe 5 minutes. (Is that what you call drop outs or?)
Downloads can be anywhere between 25-48kb/s.
Their DNS seems to be overloaded sometimes and therefore slow responses, but you can always pick another DNS.
How reliable is your cheapo these days and what speeds do you get?

My service is getting worse..
Initially I would get about 400 kbps (are you sure you dont mean KB/s in your above as thats slow) but it dropped gradually as more people join the notwork.. Now I am down to 100kbps or less on average.. Arjin claims more downstream bandwidth should be coming on soon for Phuket..
I get daily periods when for a few mins it is not working.. Seems the DNS and proxies at pacaific are to blame from what I can tell..

I mean Kilo (1024) byte. kb, Kb, KB whatever, I always write kb
Is K=1024 and k=1000 and b=bits and B=byte? I never remember what is what.

1000 byte (b) = 1 kilobyte (kb)
1000 kb = 1 megabyte (mb)
1000 mb = 1 gigabyte (gb)
1000 gb = 1 terrabyte (tb)
So there is that sorted...
Anyway - I am looking for a flat (february to december 2006) with broadband connection in Patong. Any ideas what this will cost? What is the general price of a decent broadband line?

Not correct..
Kb = 1 kilobit
KB = 1 Kilobyte
All of your above examples are out by a factor of 8.. terrabit instead of terrabyte etc..
kbps or kb/s is Kilobit per second.. Thers 8 bits to a byte..
KBps or KB/s is obviously 8 times faster than kb.. online accounts are 99% of the time rated in kilobit megabit etc.. sounds like more than it is.. 1 megabit is only 128KB
So if Nicke had 25 - 50 kbps thats slow but if it was KB/s it would be 200 - 400 kbps which is a big difference (but still slow)..

or gprs, or edge, or service, or product guarantees, or etc..
its the joys of living here and you have to adjust.. Though attempting to work a Euro schedule would produce some embarassing slips unless your boss was extreemely understanding..
My nearly new washing machine packed up.. In theory I have a guarantee but the shop that sells it sure aint backing it.. apparently the elctrolux rep comes once a month or so if you want to lodge a warantee claim.. so a local paid for engineer came.. looked at it and said he would take it away and bring it back the next day.. That was a week or more ago.. I havent even bothered to chase it yet.. Laundry is with the washer woman down the road.. I guess in a month or so I will have it fixed and have to pay.

DOH! So if you spend more, you can't get more? The wireless connection I got at MTB actually wasn't too bad.

Yep. I'm a producer/editor/motion graphics artist. What is an MS MVP?
Being from Cupertino, CA, I guess you could call me an Apple guy.

You do compression? Compression is not really my bag, but I do think it's an important skill.
I'm more of a content guy. I like to crank out the eye candy. I just worked on a doc about the Heath Brothers - awesome Jazz musicians from the be-bop era. It got accepted to the Mill Valley Film Festival. (Hey Jay Bee, check that out!)
I guess they can always FedEx the tapes to me. Hey, you want the best, ya gotta wait.

internet
I used an ADSL internet place called liontchai which was fast and reliable (1baht/min). I did notice they advertised some apartments in Phuket for rent with free ADSL so you could take a look at www.liontchai.com . The rates were 800 baht/ day with long term discounts available.

At Victoria Guesthouse, Basse (the owner) is working on a wireless Internet system!
He is bying the equipment here in Sweden and are planning to go down in the beginning of September for installation!
He already have ADSL in reception wich is free for guest to use.
During my five month stay this winter I'll be sitting there a lot, as I have giving up any trys to find a flat with internet connection!

Saw today that Burasari has free wireless internet (but you have to bring your own laptop, they say). Hotel not GF, I think. I have also seen a wireless router in Patong Bay garden Resort.

GF = Guest friendly which should mean does not charge a joiner fee but can be used sometimes to mean that even if they do chare a fee they are polite and nice to any night guests (though thats not truly guest friendly to me)..
LOS = Land of Smiles = Thailand..
As to the Burasai they are notoriously not guest friendly and I have heard many reports of them being rude, condecending, just plain difficult with any night visitors.. My personal issue was me and wifey1 were booked in for a couple of weeks on a vacation and on returning the first night the security guard wanted her ID card and was rude about it.. I explained we were both booked in and she was jot merely a visitor but a paying guest and he was still attitudy and rude.
The next morning I went and spoke with management to clear the issue up as it was offputting and I wasnt into taking sh1t on my vacation or having my girl get sh1t.. The manager assured us it would be cleared up and night guy would be informed and it was a mistake.. Next night return same guard, same bad attitude, same shit.. We checked out the following morning.
The whole hotel from reception to security and even to management seems to have a very sneering and contemptious attitude to a attractive thai woman.. Even to the extent of ignoring her in the lobby and being obviously ubrupt and rude.. This was to someone who was a paying guest booked in at arrival.
If thats thier attitude to my girlfriend they can stick thier hotel right up thier @rse.. I have heard similar stories since then and understand they charge a very high joiner fee (1000 baht ??) not sure as I never took a night guest back as was with my missus of the time.

Seems crazy to me. Sorry to hear that a situation like that can arise in LOS (lol)... Again - as I am new to all these things about Thailand, what is a JOINER FEE? Is it what you have to pay to have an extra guest in your room overnight?
