Education for my kids - is there a cheaper alternative?

Hi guys

Desperately needs some help here. A language school in BKK has offered me a job with pay close to 60K Baht. I'm seriously thinking about taking it but they won't pay for my kids school fees. My kids are 12 and 9 and the international schools are so expensive. Is there an alternative with regards to the international schools in BKK and what's the alternative?

There must be other BMs here who are educating their kids in BKK and either can't afford to or simply refuse to send their kids to these ridiculously expensive international schools.

Would so love to hear what you recommend.

Thanks everyone.

A skint parent

Hi Raggamuffin - thats a good salery for a language school, so should be pleased about that. Stickman (www.stickmanbangkok.com) has writen extensively on teaching in Thailand and check out www.ajarn.com for teacher to teacher info.

I'm not sure about Bangkok schools in particular - but in Phuket basically have 4 types of school -

1) Thai - follow Thai curriculum in Thai - free to age 15.
2) Thai curriculum with extra english and better (?) teachers - small fee payable, many better off Thai's choose this - its around 10K/year.
3) Bilingual School - These schools follow Thai curiculum but in English tought by foreign (english speaking) teachers and also a Thai teacher - I send my kids to this kind of school - 80% English and 20% Thai - aprox 85k/year.
4) International Scoool - follows IB/US or international GCSE (UK) curricular - but very expensive - tought by foreign (english speaking) teachers - fees 300k/year +.

It would be good if you could persaude your employer to take your kids into the school there - or at least a discounted rate.

Good Luck

Thanks a lot K2. Really useful info. Btw - are you happy with the education that your kids are receiving in Thailand or would you prefer for them to be receiving an education back in your own country?

Cheers

There is no way I would subject my children to the education system here in anything less than the top international schools.. Your just ruining thier education years.

60k for a single adult in BKK sure.. 60k to take care of children, house and feed everyone, educate them to a level that gives them a fair start in life ???

Personally I think you need to examine your priorities a little bit. Your kids should come first.

Very happy with the education they are receiving (ages 4,5) - when get to 15/16 will have to think about whats best for them - probably be best they take internationally recognised qualifications as Thai qualifications not accepted by overseas universities.

wont 15/16 be too late ?? the 11 - 16 secondary phase being the basic start.

Its doable but yes frugally.. Then add in family.. Then add in schooling.. Then add in medical cover for an entire family..

Not viable for me..
