JW Marriott v Sheraton
I am a reasonably regular traveller to Asia but am about to make by first trip to Bangkok.
The company I am working for uses either Marriott or Sheraton Hotels and as such I will be staying at one of these (my choice) and I am seeking some advice from you non-"virgins" as to which is the better hotel and also how GF each of these hotels is??
Any advice is appreciated (will be over there in early July).
Cheers.

JW Marriot closer to NEP, but the Sheraton is closer to Cowboy. I would pick the Marriott.

From previous BM reports, the Marriott is, and I think the Sheraton is.

Stayed at both - prefer the Marriott
I've stayed at the Marriott three times and the Sheraton once. Both were nice, but the Marriott has a much nicer lobby and bar area, and while both were certainly friendly, the service at the Marriott was great both times I stayed there. No problem with bringing in companions at the Marriott, and the greeting and service was always friendly and enthusiastic every time I came back with a guest. The girl I eventually ended up spending a lot of time with enjoyed talking to the women who worked at the lobby bar - we would stop in for a drink when we retired for the evening. Similarly priced rooms are very comparable - no significant difference in quality.
Hope this helps...

I have stayed at both JW Marriott and Sheraton.
I like JW Marriott, although they are both QUALITY hotels.
I've booked the Majestic Grand, for my next visit. I'ts just across the street from JW Marriott, so location is GREAT. And, I've read a lot of good reviews on the place.
Will add mine, upon my return.

IMHO the Sheraton is a better hotel of more class than the Marriott.
If it was only for the Sunday Brunch at the Sheraton........ my choice!
Location also better with direct link to the BTS and a mere minute away from the subway.
But, both are good hotels..

Thanks.
How far is it from the Sheraton to Nana? I like the look of the Sheraton but am concerned that the walk to Nana may be a bit far (after the BTS stops)...
Cheers.

I hear ya Johhny.
It does get a bit "pricy"...after a couple of days!
That's why, I'm "checking out", the Majestic Grand. Their rates, for a comparable room, seem to be around 30% to 40% lower!

Another option for "classy" hotels is the Shangri-La. Its right on the canal, with the breakfast area at the waterside. I think the service at Shangri-La is way better than the other chains generally.

Same same me. And less chance they will try to take you to the cleaners, only because you stay in a 5 star hotel. Just my thought.

The only good thing....
...is that you feel like at home looking at the pictures on the wall....no real link with local life....but if this is your choice....

JW Marriott gets my vote
I always stay at the JW and in an Executive Room (OK so I do get Lounge Access as a Platinum Marriott Rewards member). The extras you get are even worth paying. The Sunday Brunch is superb. Cannot wait until January when I'll be back there.

Hi even though i have had not tried either of these hotels in Bangkok .
I was watching a holiday program on tv the other month and they did an undercover report.
This included the Sheraton which was good but they did prefer the Hilton .
So you might want to give that one a go.
PS not the Hilton if you have comitted a crime.

OK I stayed in the JW this last weekend and had a great time, to which the hotel certainly made a contribution. Here are my thoughts:-
This JWM is no where near as good as the one in Hong Kong, and some things were not to top class standard, such as the room I stayed in was getting tatty (ciggie burn in carpet, need a new coat of paint, etc.). There was no discount for Marriott Elite members unless you were Gold member or above, security was a joke (checking for bombs under vehicles about 5 metres from the lobby, when its a bit late).
On the plus side: location, only a five minute walk from Nana, the staff are as ggod as any Marriott staff and make you feel at home, GF (or, so I observed), great breakfast buffet.
They did give me the option of upgrading to an executive room for an extra USD50 per night (better room, free breakfast for 2, and free drinks in executive lounge between 6&8pm), but I declined.
Have only stayed at 2 hotels in BKK: Shangri-La and Marriott. Latter certainly wins on location, the other on luxury.

i love bkk, but i also think its very hectic and dirty so i appreciate a luxury hotel in bkk to get away from things. like an oasis!

Strange - I stayed at the Hong Kong JW 3 months ago and did not rate the room as good as the JWM in Bangkok. The room was smaller and more old fashioned. The Executive Lounge (I get access as a platinum member) in Hong Kong is no where near as good as the one in Bangkok. The one area where I think the Hong Kong property was better than the Bangkok one was the swimming pool area.

John

Sukhumvit grand off soy 4 is pretty nice. Its brand new and they are still building the top floors. Superb rooms but Expect to pay extra for company.
