24 hours in bangkok

Hi all,
have been to phuket (one trip), Bangkok I’ve used only as a hub in or out.
My Brother and I will be in Bangkok (after 9 days in phuket see you at MTB)for about 24 hours staying at
NARAI HOTEL BANGKOK CITY
Wed 05Jul06 Out Thu 06Jul06
222 Silom Road
BANGKOK THAILAND 10500
We’d like to do the canals (klongs?), and the floating market has also been recommended.
I’ve tried maps ( google earth and maps ) but it didn’t show me where I am.
Given the short amount of time and not knowing the location any suggestions?
Previous suggestions when I've asked about the hotel told me I'm too close to Patpong and I will go broke. I searched this and taking bangkok bob's advice I will steer clear.
thanks

Narai is on Silom road, approx halfway between Rama and River. Both can be done walking, but not close. There is a Novotel in the vicinity. Narai is not GF and asks a joiner fee.
Floating market of Damern Sadoeak is a day excursion.

If you only have 24 hours in Bangkok and you want to do one thing then go to the Grand palace if you havent been. Its well worth a visit could take a couple of hours depending on how long you spend there.

I know 222 Silom Rd quite well....there is a very nice open air restaurant on the ground floor.....you are about a brisk 10 minute from Patpong, so your not exactly right on top of it....Why stay clear of Patpong, it's lively it's fun, quite a nice area to stay in actually.....Bangkok Bob must be a wet blanket.....fair enough if you live there you become sick of the place, but if your a tourist l can see any problem visiting it.....DO NOT go to any upstairs establishments though...he is right about that.

If you do go to the floating market.....make sure you go real early.

to go to the Grand Palace (Jade Buddha etc..) and Wat Po (Reclining Buddha) take the BTS to Saphan Taksin Stop. This leads directly to the Chao Praya River where you can get a water taxi to Chang Stop (for GP and WP) for about 8B or a bit more if you get on the "tourist" water taxi.

Walk out from the pier and the GP will be on the right. Don't let anybody Tuktuk driver, Thai touts) tell you it's closed and they will take you someplace else.

Entrance fee is 200B, I think. There will be guys at the entrance asking to be a tour guide. I hired one for 200B and he walked me around and asnwered questions i had.

Wat Po is a bit further in the same direction you came in. same deal works there.

Just retrace your steps to go back to the hotel.

Don't forget to wear longpants/sleeved shirt (no shorts/tanktops).

Is it called silom village inn ?? was very good in january. as already mentioned Patpong is not far away. can recommend Queens castle (nice live music) and Kings castle II.

The nearest boat pier should be oriental pier down the silom road. go right at the end, and the first left. past the oriental and through the small road ! here you are !

thanks Mosti, the good thing about being a BM is i can search myself, if you know what i mean, when i get there to remind my self what i want to do.

I should change my signature to "my brain is too small be out on it's own", but my brother will be there to supervise this time.
thanks
