Cinemas

I know its a longshot, but i dont suppose there are any cinemas in bangkok that screen THAI movies with ENGLISH subtitles ?
It would be nice to be able to go to the movies with my mrs and both enjoy a thai movie.
Maybe i should learn to speak thai better..

Cheers
Simon

I've seen the posters outside cinemas, especially in tourist areas, have "English", "Thai with English Subtitles" etc. printed across the bottom. They tend to be the bigger cineplexes which show mainstream (Hollywood) movies anyway.

Most cinemas (Phuket town, SFX etc) will show the main attraction in both English with Thai subs and Thai with English subs even for the big American movies.. Thai movies sometimes have english subs.. Will say as part of the program info.

Thai movies tend to be pretty infantile though.. Bad ghost sories, slapstick comedy with lots of inuendo a la carry on type stuff or super mushy romance.. Occasionally you get a semi watchable action like Tom Yam Goong but I can count.. er.. 2 of those !!! I have yet to see anything that was acted, told an adult story etc.. Saw a trailor for a second world war drama one but missed its release.. Also was kind of wondering how they made an action movie about collaborating with the Japanese and then pretending they didnt..

SFX is all listed online.. Thier first class cinema with the private waiting area, bar, bottles of wine, nibbles, free popcorn and drinks.. Nice experience.

With Spanish I liked to look for DVDs with Spanish soundtracks and English/Spanish subtitles so I could swap between the two - had to avoid movies with next-to-nil dialogue (Schwarzenegger et al.) or lots of dialect (Gangs of NY).

Going to have to have a look around for some Thai DVDs with English subtitles, however, from what I saw last tour at the Majestic the subtitling of the pirate versions was pretty dodgy - the subtitling to the dubbed Narnia film was almost unintelligible

The real problem I have with cinemas is that I fall asleep half way through and wake up to find there's no rewind button Last tour got taken by TG to see Ultra Violet (basically cute girl with samurai sword hacks everybody else to death) - nodded off big-time

just my thoughts but watching a thai movie with english subtitles is a almost disturbing experience. because if you speak some thai and then look at the english subtitles the thai meaning is so far from the english words used.

i now dont watch any thai movie with english subtitles when in los i would rather just bumble along in my english translation of the dialogue

It's useful, even without subtitles and when you're at home without access to real-time interfaces (Thai people), to attune your ear to the lingo, even if you don't understand it.

Tom Yam Goong that is one of my favourite movies of all time ( i know big call )

I just cant get over the fight scenes in that movie. Apart from previous movies like Ong Bak, does anyone know if Tony Jaa has made any new movies ? I reckon its only a matter of time before he is discovered by hollywood and becomes the next big thing..

Why not? Couple of DVDs for personal use!!!! It is not intended for distribution!!

This is like buying a booze for personal use on the arrival but not from public shopping areas in Dubai as it is illegal!!!

It is not illegal to buy booze in Dubai , if you are working there you can apply for an "Alcohol Permit" and buy your booze at various outlets. Porn is illegal, even for your own personal use , that is why so many websites are blocked. If you are caught trying to bring porn into Dubai , chances are your visa/residence permit will be revoked.............and you may even get to experience the hospitality of the local nick.

I like Thai movies, as I am bored with Hollywood productions, and they show more of real Thailand and how Thai people think.

Most major Thai movies have Eng subtitles at cinemas in Phuket, and they are funny to watch. Mainstream movies I usually buy on the street and watch at home on my DVD player.

What I meant by illegal about booze is that you wont find it in Booze shops because they dont exist according to the law. However, you still can buy it from Hotels and bars.

As for blocking Born sites, this is a conservative attitude to protect children and very young people from being exposed to harmful material not suitable to their age, beside it is abiding to the Islamic rule (Strange ha, prostitutes and booze are ok, but not that ). However, do you think if you copy the DVDs to your hard disk (which is a very personal item) will put you in trouble also. I don't think so because by Law nobody can access your personal material except by court persmission!!!!

Sorry to say , but you are wrong again. "Booze shops" do exist and are legal , the only requirement is that you have a government issued "Permit". I visited them a lot and bought booze for parties etc, alcohol bought in Hotels and bars must be consumed on the premises.

On your second point , if you have the "original" DVD's customs are within their rights to check them , if they suspect you may have "illegal material" on your hard drive they will confiscate it , and I can guarantee they will get "permission" to access it. Remember , this is not the Western world , and the same rules do not apply. It was only last year that a Western woman was jailed for having Codeine tablets in her luggage , not knowing the law is no excuse.
