3 nights in BKK- your list of do's and don'ts
My wife and I are in BKK for 3 nights before a week in Phi Phi Island- first time at either place. What should I do in BKK? I know shopping, fights, temples, etc but anything specific? We'll be there Fri night late- then sat sun and monday nights.
for example- if I could have seen this list for New York City- I would know not to waste my time at the empire state or statue of liberty.
so, any advice is appreciated. Keep in mind my wife is there so a go go bar is not likely.

If that's your definition, then you will never really be able to get this list. I have visited NYC many times and I've even been living there for two years. And at any time (at least after you don't have the choice of the alternative in WTC), then I would put the ESB up as one of the top must sees in NYC. But of cause if you interests are purely culture and museums, then you would not have the same list as me.
And for Bangkok same same. Unless you tell us more about what you like and not like (i.e. a-go-go's, when I was there 14 years ago with my ex-wife of cause we had to see a real BKK a-go-go - that's so different from anything else I've ever seen - and very different from anything see had seen - and although she didn't like then it was an experience she wouldn't have been without), then it's close to impossible to do this list.

Have you thought about taking a day trip up to Kanchanaburi to the River Kwai? Haven't been myself but its sounds like a worthwhile trip.
You should still have a great time with your wife in ordinary bars, without going to go go bars, although if you are there it would be a shame not to take a look

Go to the Shangri-La Hotel, walk thru the lobby and out onto the river front. At the wharf you can hire a long tail boat for couple of hours. Be sure to stop off at the Croc & Snake farm for half an hour....Two hours well spent before lunch and the cost is around 800 Baht...Enjoy.

Gogo's a no go, but take your wife to patpong to see a ping pong show... Later ask her to try and see if she can do it??? I've asked many of my lady friends, non of them are that talented... Its something to see that you won't see anywhere else...

Of cause, I always plan to go there at times where the line is not too long. My most memorable visit to ESB was on September 22nd. 2001 - you could still see the smoke from Ground Zero! In fact it was my most memorable visit to the Big Apple ever. It was the first day after 9/11 they opened ESB to the public!

Just one man's opinion but...
If you only see one temple complex make it the Grand Palace.Lots to look at within it's walls.Very colourful glass mosaic work everywhere and interesting buildings.Don't miss the temple of the Emerald Buddha,Thailand's most precious artifact. It's a small jade Buddha, but the temple is absolutely packed with gold and jewels.
Wat Po is right beside the Grand palace so I guess it's worth seeing the 50 foot Reclining Buddha, but it is hard to get a good picture of it and there's not much else there that interested me,compared to the GP.Some nice temples, and Thailands oldest massage school but just not as impressive as the GP.
If you cross the road from the GP you can take a boat across the river to Wat Arun, which was the first Wat built when the Capitol was moved.Very old and very big but take your pictures from the river, cause you'll never fit the whole thing in the picture once you get close.
You could probably do all three locations in a relaxed day and include a Klong tour but if you're only visiting one, make it the Grand Palace.
Lumphini Stadium highly recommended but check which night the good(title) fights are. Some nights do not have the high profile fighters. If memory serves Monday night is not as good.
And definately take your wife to a gogo.Lots of wives go in and it really is a fun atmosphere for everyone. You'll see!
Late night walk on Sukumvit is one of my favorite but maybe that's the single guy in me talking.

BEST 2 TRIPS I HAVE MADE FROM BANGKOK have been the river kwai and kanchanaburi (remarkable experience especially the war cemetary) and the grand palace tour
in my opinion you should avoid going anywhere near patpong its a total rip off from one end to the other !

Sunday afternoon: horseracing.
Snakefarm: very interesting.
Nana Plaza: even if you do not partake, it is quite interesting. And even if not buying, you will not be harassed.

Get lots of massages and foot rubs. Eat lots of great food. Go to the Bedroom Club then go to Q to dance the night away. Ride in Tuk Tuks. Check out the Grand Palace. Walk around Chinatown. See the Weekend Market, it's great for gifts for the folks back home. Lots to do.

If in Bangkok for such a short time I think that recommending going to Kanchanaburi or other places is a waste of time. Bangkok is such an interesting city with plenty of special places to keep you busy for weeks...
A short list from my side:
1. Visit to Grand Palace / Wat Pra Keaw
2. Klong-tour with visit to Koh Pakkret, Nonthaburi.
3. Shopping at Chatuchak (JJ) weekend market
4. Visit to Patpong night market or Lumpini night market.
5. Thai Massage or relaxing in a spa.
6. Visit the Bayoke 2 tower. Highest building of Bangkok (only for view)
7. See a Muay Thai Boxing fight at Rachadamnoen or Lumpini.
8. An evening eating, drinking and entertainment at ‘Tawandeang’
9. A bicycle tour through Bangkok. ( http://www.bangkokbiking.com)
10. Visit the Erawan Shrine.
11. Visit the Jim Thompson House.
12. A night clubbing at Bed Supperclub and Q Bar.
13. Sunday brunch at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit.
Enjoy!
