Frankly i'm not too impressed Too much backpackers... and "The Beach" have gloryfied that place IMHO.
I will say that I do enjoy Gullivers for an afternoon session of drinking, pool and snacks before I head to Patpong or Nana

Kao San.......
Alot of good cheap places to eat....some good Travel Agents, and alot of bad ones.
Travel Hub for most BP's in South East Asia.
Some good bars, but if its BKK nightlife your after...this is not the place, there are a few Bar/discos, but caters to BP's needs.

khao san is only good for cheap eats ,accomo, and beer.thai people only go there to laugh and stare at the scuzzy backpacker falang.
if you have got a bolt throgh your nose and have not washed for a week you will feel at home ,otherwise head across the city to sukumvit/nana and you will get your nightlife and will be happier i think.

Well, around 200-250 bath for cab ride...get a metered Taxi.
You could goto Katusjak Market, and take the Skytrain all the way to Nana, cost almost nothing
Are your accomodation at TH Kao San, if not, and its the colourfull nightlife you want at nigth, there are plenty of cheap good accomodation at Sukhumvit area.

It's not all that bad ;-)
It's been almost a tradition for me to go to Khao San for a couple of hours before I go to the Airport to watch the pale white ppl arriving on their first day in LOS. A good mix of all sorts of folks, indeed a lot of guys with dreadlocks & bolts through their noses, but also a lot of couples, girls on a trip together, family's with baby's (most scandinavian) etc. etc. It's great to see the difference between the guys who just arrive and the guys who are leaving. The arrivals are walking very insecure, almost stressed and look horribly white and unhealthy. The guys who come back are cool as shit, in sync with the Thai pace of life and no aggressive street seller can shock them anymore ("mai pen rai" attitude, which unfortunatly will get lost in the next couple of weeks back in the West) - And they all got healthy, good looking skin.
Good fun. Would I stay there in a Hotel ? No defo not. Just good for a night out I guess.
Well, let's see, with the new airport not that close no more, I guess a quick trip to that road before departure will be history anyway.

traditional thai teak wood house in Bangkok Thailand rent homestay home stays Taling
daytime activities within a few minutes walk of khaosan rd might include: the grand palace, wat pho, national museum, national gallery, national theatre, national library, the golden mount, riverboat express, massage therapy clinics for 140 baht/h (half the Sukhumwit price)
