another newboy

hello all ,
the forum is great for info,so i'm hoping for some good info .
i intend to come in next 3 or 4 weeks and stay in bangkok for a couple /few days then go to pattaya for a week+ then a day or two back in banhgkok .would also like to visit river kwai.(total14-17 days).does this sound feasable.
any usefull info would be appreciated ,where is the best place to bump into some expats and get the lowdown over a couple of beers.reading the forums the nana seems the place but is this a bit full on for newcomer .what are good hotels in the $50 or thereabouts price range both in bangkok and pattaya.
any handy tips on transport from airport and betwean bangkok and pattaya.
is it best to get girls from full on places or the quieter areas.do they still have the 2 hour massage places i have heard about where you just pick a girl from the fishbowl and how much are they.
any help much appreciated.

Hotel i would recomend is the Majestic Suites

Majestic Suites Hotel, Nana Hotel Bangkok, Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit, Budget Hotel and Discounted Hotel in Bangkok.

Its just around the corner from Nana.

Nana (or even Soi cowboy) is not too full on its a great place to get the feel of Bangkok for the newbie the place to avoid if you dont want to get conned is Patpong.

You can catch a train or the bus down to Kanchanburi (River Kwai) more info on there under Issan and other cities.

I don't know where the river kwai is and how to get there, but the rest sound very doable. Pattaya is only 2 hour drive (or less at times) from Bangkok. At US$50 or less you have several choices. In Bangkok I have had good experiences with the Dynasty and their best room is around the US$50 mark and other rooms starts at US$35. They have four type and I would stay away from the smallest. Majestic is right around the corner from Nana Plaza and a 5 minute cab or sky-train away from Sou Cowboy.
Travel from Bangkok to Pattaya is best done by cab or Limo. In the area of Majestic and much of Sukhumvit road there are girls everywhere. As for the Fishbowls there are many in Bangkok, some obviously better than others. Near the Majestic is a place called Annie's. That place is quite bad I think. I have good experiences with Utopia, which is 7-8 minutes with taxi (about 60 baht) away. The prices there is a bit higher than say Annie's (2200 baht as far as I recall), but the place is great and they welcome farangs and do not give commissions to taxi drivers.

Majestic suites and the Dynasty Inn grande are safe bets as far as hotels go.
I stayed in the Dynasty last month... Very hard to find fault with it.

2000 bt for LT is what you should be aiming for as regards the women... They will look for more. Up to You.

Have a pleasant trip.

River Kwai is a long day trip but worth to do it once. Just ask at your hotel desk for tour details.

Nana is not a bad place to meet up more than likely in the bars at the entrance,

Nana is on Sukumvit soi 4 and Soi Cowboy is By Sukumvit soi 23.

There are a lot more bars both on Sukumvit and all the soi's running off it.

Pool bars, beer gardens, etc where you can meet ex pats for a chat or pick up Ladies.

I went into the lobby and strolled around a little during my last trip. That does not make an expert, but from what I saw I would rather stay elsewhere.

The river kwai bridge is near Kanchanaburi. I think there will be quite some options in BKK to get you on a one or two day tour. Try your hotel lobby or a local travel agency.
I was there in 1994 and found it very impressive. Also stroll over the war cemetary and visit the little museum. It was good to see how the local people keep the cemetary in a perfect condition.

Enjoy your trip.

The context of the question was whether the Nana Hotel is the best place to meet up with expats. Clearly, the answer is a resounding "yes". Not whether it was a fleapit, or whether a BM would stay there or not. You will have division on that issue.

I've stayed there over 20 times. It's fine for me. Free buffet brekky, NEP across the street, internet cafe next door, family mart across the street, 7-11round the corner, Angel's disco, comfortable king beds, free unlimited bottled water, close to JWM, decent pool, travel agent right there, taxi service, haircut, coffee shop, fast room service and laundry etc,etc,etc..

That's why I say, stay there at least once and then choose your camp. Yea or nea.

The TanMan

again ,many good points raised.TANMAN makes good point about meeting expats -thanks.may try nana for a couple of days and if don't like it stay elsewhere on return from pattaya.although the dynasty also sounds like a good bet.

just been looking on the map on net and it doesn't look as if its far betwean nana and soy cowboy.i know this can be misleading .how far is it in terms of kms or minutes to walk there .just to get a feel for the place.

thanks again.

I'd say it is about 1.5 kms. About 15 minutes to walk.

Not far in the scheme of things, but it's bloody hot work.

yes i think it would be hot work.may take a while stopping for refreshments on the way every few minutes.

another question ,is it easy to get western (aussie or english) type food .i've heard it is .i hope so as i am aflicted with dodgy guts and can't take too much spicy stuff.

also thanks Nanook for info on river kwai ,i really want to visit.probably an overnight visit .might be a good way to have a break after a few frantic days in bkk.

Yes, there are many Western dining options.

I've eaten here a couple of times and can recommend it as a place that won't break the budget: Bourbon Street Restaurant, Bar&Boutique Hotel

There is also the Down Under bar which puts on (still put on?) a free BBQ each night from about 6pm: The Aussie Down under Pub in Bangkok

Plenty of other more upmarket options, depending on how much yopu want to spend really: See this thread about steakhouses: http://www.phuket-info.com/forums/ba...vhit-area.html

It can be hot work or even sometimes wet work but it is well worth the walk there are plenty of places to stop for refreshment but mostly on the soi's running off sukumvit.

You also have the choice of the sky train which runs directly above sukumvit you cant miss the stations or its a 40Baht taxi ride.

Your plan is more than do able... You will need an early start to the river kwai tho so have an easy night the night before.... Well worth doing once in your life. Also another daytrip worth doing is visiting the ancient ruined city of Thailands previous capital Ayutthaya... But that depends on if you get time.

Recomendations for jabs would usually be Typhiod, Hepatatitus and Tetnus (forgive the bad spelling) and a Polio drop. I have had all of them done before i go but really thats your choice. There are some people who dont have them done and dont have problems but i always would... Better to be safe than sorry. Also that was the advice from my doctor and i dont know how it works in Australia but as all the jabs were free in the UK i didnt see the point in refusing them.

Also If i were you i would do my first visit in the nightlife areas in Bangkok to Soi Cowboy (Asoke station on the skytrain if i remember correctly). Less pushy than Patpong and IMHO a little bit easier as a first night out then Nana... Although you should deffinatly visit Nana and Patpong while you are there.... No trip to Bangkok is complete without them.

Enjoy your trip
