Arriving Chinese New year

Hi all, Me and a mate are going to Thailand in Feb. We want to stay in Bangkok for 1 night. We arrive chinese new year morning 18th and leave the next evening. We want to see the grande palace and walk to Chinatown that night. Is chinatown safe for farangs in the night? And mabye end up in a nice friendly bar in the evening. Can anyone tell me of a hotel between these or near. I have looked on sawadee.com and a map of bangkok but cant tie the roads quoted on sawadee to the map :0(
