River Kwai.best way to get there...does the train stop to let you see the bridge?

Just doing some homework before venturing into Thailand ..Bangkok in March for three days
This forum has been very helpful and given some real insight rather than the tourist agent viewpoint
Couple of Questions

Does the 7.35 train to Kwai/ Nam tok stop at the bridge to allow you to get off and have a lookand reboard?
Is a better option to hire a driver with aircon car and do the trip that way?
any idea of price and name of driver/car company?

Thanks in Advance

Do the tour thing, other things to see on the way. Ask your hotel reception to book for you. Warning though, it is a bloody long day.

did the tour (hired tour guide and driver)from cha am was a long day but very enjoyable, the war cementary was interesting and had a good feel about it with people showing respect.
had a good look at the museum but maybe not everyones cup of tea.
Bridge is fairly average, but from historical point of view o/k.

we did the trip thing but included an overnight stay in a little hotel just down from the bridge. The night we where there they had a show on the river with the bridge and prision camp all lit up, we watched it from a raft on the river. It was all very well done we really enjoyed the trip.

The train does stop at the bridge and its the first stop after Kanchanburi 5 minutes away. If you get off you wont have time to look around and get back on to go to Nam Tok.

You could catch the later train to Nam Tok but wouldnt have any time there and after the 3 hours to the bridge you wouldnt want to go any further due the wooden seats.

What I did was catch the train to the bridge, have night in a hotel, next day have a day trip to Nam Tok, another night in the hotel and caught the bus back to Bkk the next day.

Note - There's not a lot to see from the train traveling from Bkk to Kanchanburi but the scenery is worth seeing off the train from Kanchanburi to Nam Tok. You can aslo walk over the bridge and back.

Search for Kanchanburi in the "Issan and other cities" part of the forum you will find more on the subject and some pics I posted there.

Dont be put off, if you havnt done it before, it is worth the effort. But do the bus trip from Bangkok, as you will visit other places on the way.

Thumbs up Kwai Bridge etc

I can concur with the recent posters above. It is worth going out to the area but I suggest an organised coach trip. We did one that did the bridge, museum and cemetry and the tiger sanctuary. It's an all day affair but well worth it. If you are slightly interested in military history or the old movie you will enjoy it. the tiger sanctuary is pretty good too IMHO

I've been to Kan on several occasions and I'd recommend either doing an organized day trip (and yes, it is a very long day) or go independant and spend at least 1 night. There is a lot to see there that is not in Kan itself and will take a little effort to get to, such as Earwan Falls (reached by public bus). The SRT does a day trip on the weekend that is good also and very reasonable.

Talbotman

GEORGELONDON i have done the river kwai trip 2 times it is probably my favourite place i have been on a trip in thailand first time i went i did it as STEVEM sugested by organised coach trip THE BUS picked us up at our bk hotel at 0630 am and we made our way to the kwai first stop was the old camp which used to be used for the prisoners it has been turneed into a museum from there you walk down to the waters edge and get onto a long boat which whizzes you up the river to the bridge at the bridge you had 1 hour to mill around before catching the train which stopped on the bridge itself the train journeyed about 1 hour to the cambodian border area where everyone in our party got out we then had lunch at a jungle restaurant before boarding the bus which was waiting for us and making our way down to kanchanaburi to visit the war cemetary THIS IS THE MOST UNFORGETABLE PART OF THE TRIP standing there in that cemetary looking at all the graves of young guys who were basically starved to death i am not ashamed to say brought tears to my eyes . Then you board the bus again for thetrip back to bangkok it was an unforgettable trip

in december 2004 whilst spending some time in huahin i visited once again as it is even easier to get to the kwai from hua hin or cha am

as i say for anyone wanting to go i would book a tour trip .

I definatly enjoyed the trip and would do it all again (yes even the 3 hour train journey) Ok I guess i would take the bus to Kanchanburi but the area is a great place to stay and plenty of places to visit which I never got around to.

Cheaper booking it in BKK then from O/S.

I concur with Talbotman, did exactly the same trip and although it's a full day. I was happy it was organised that way, and it got you out of BKK for the day.

Most of the hotel have tour agents and can ask at any hotel. The people who come over on packaged deals, will also have free tour etc, and the ability to browse any additional tours if required and booked with these agents. What we did once was to grab one of these agents when we wanted to do a tour, and was all organised on the spot. This can make your trip flexible and no shortage of tour group wanting your business. Also cheaper booking it in BKK then from O/S.

I think it would be a good place to go if you could stay over night i knew nothing so simply jumped on the train saw the bridge and headed back i didnt know what else to do

i guess if u planned it well it would be a worthwhile trip i didint so thats why i hated it , it was more of a 3rd class train journey of pure annoyance

It's a Magical Experience and one I wish to repeat very soon !

tas1...Shame you did not enjoy it but at least you made the effort to go there and show respect to those kids who died so young.
