Down Under Bar
Hi All.
I hope no one minds but this is an unashamed plug for the Down Under Bar on Soi7/1.
I had 3 days in bangers on the way home from New Year in japan and found my to the bar quite easily as I was staying on Soi 15 and it want far away. Besides that having a drink opposite the Eden Club was as close as a married guy can get.....well this one anyway.
Rob the owner was very hospitable, introduced me around, and I even got a good drinking pubbing buddy for the 2nd night I was there (saturday night). Went to thr Bamboo Bar, New Wave, Rooftop Bar at Sin and braved the carpark at closing time for Nana. man what an experience. I felt like a Lama walking through a herd of hungry Lions. Girls giving me that fresh meat look. And I was too. I was new to that scene and they knew it.
Its not hard to see why Thailand is so darn popular. There is simply something for everyone. My wife and I honeymooned there in April and loved it. We are hoping to get a week in on Phuket or Samui later in the year.
Anyway thanks to Rob and the staff for their hospitality, Andrew for a good night out on the turps, and anyone I had a yarn with over a beer at the bar.
I hope the incidents of New Year dont repeat themselves and that the tourists keep their holiday plans intact. Thailand is simply brilliant......but we already know that.

Had a great time.

I watched some of the Ashes cricket at the Down Under Bar. Great little venue and Rob is as Aussie as you can get. Loves a beer! Loves his cricket!
There is a lovely bar attendant there too, I forget her name, very shy. I could have easily fallen for her charms. Beautiful smile.

I've given the place a big wrap before now as well. Rob was extremely helpful last time I dropped by and with a quick phone call sorted out a small problem for me. Friendly staff, convenient location - I drop by whenever I'm in Bangkok these days.

Name rings a bell, but how many "Li's" did I meet on my holiday?!
She works behind the bar - not a hospitality girl - and has somewhat darker skin than your average Thai girl. She is around 30yo from memory, but looks 25. Round face, piercing eyes. Super sexy.
We got chatting - she was very shy - and I asked here why she's single. She said that "Thai men don't find me beautiful, dark skin" which almost shattered me.
The day I was chatting/flirting with her I had a flight to catch later in the day. Or else I would have asked her out on a date for dinner and some vino rosso.

I've still got Phuket to do. Will do it on Saturday.
Will keep it brief, since the Trip Reports have been moved to a different location on this forum now.

Amazes me to hear people say nice things about the owner of this bar, I've never heard him say a nice thing about Thais ever!! A man with a huge chip on his shoulder, miserable git.
He gave up the bar to Thomas and Johnny with an option to buy, then lo and behold, once they turned the bar around, he wanted it back.
They walked away and set up a far superior bar in Soi 23 and left Rob to drag Down Under back to where it and he belongs.

Maybe you haven't spent enough time with him, you obviously do not know the truth about her, ask him? See what he says, mention the Thong Lor police in relation to her, his blood may boil.
I have listening to him and the bile he spews forth more than enough, many regular (not tourist) customers have deserted him, I wonder why, when the guys he wanted to sell the bar to left, the majority of the staff left with him.
he's a sour puss and deserves his inevitable fate....you'll find out.

well to be honest last time i was there was feb last year. i did hear from other sources about his trouble regarding the police you mentioned.
i met thomas a few times. a nice guy. although he spent most of the time on his laptop at the back of the bar!
im heading straight for phuket this tour and gonna stay there for the duration ,so will not be hitting bkk or the downunder! going by your update...maybe a good move.
