Welcome to the forum Gary.
Certainly a different type of 1st post for a newbie, but enjoy the board.

Really weird 'cos I've been thinking about this too. I'm going over for a few months soon, and for some reason I started thinking about how I'd always wanted to fly a model helicopter.
Thing is I don't want to stay in my room all the time watching telly, or be drinking all day, so I thought about some hobbies I never got around to actually doing. I thought that with Bangkok being a capital city I may be able to try some unique things around town.

hi Garry,..Have stayed in Bangkok several times including 3 months late 2005 but not seen any hobby shops (not looking for them though) not even at Chatuchak market where you find most things (but it is a big place)...
I guess not many Thai's can afford a hobby so may be not much demand, however as jimholio more or less suggests do as much homework on the net before you go, Bangkok can be a frustrating place looking for something without knowing where to start...All the best....

Dont think you'll be renting one anywhere, model choppers are extremely difficult to fly without considerable practise, and they arent cheap.
Also dont have the belief that because its Thailand modelling supplies will be cheaper than back home, quite the opposite as its not a big market there prices are often quite expensive.

There is a good model shop in Patts. 2nd road i think but not 100%....
Looks like they have some good stuff in there....
Quick story.
My mate bought an rc helicopter for 600eur,got it home and put it together....
Took its maiden flight in his kitchen about 2ft off the ground.....The thing smashed to smithereens off the worktops 55555555555555
That was fair funny.

Go in any model shop and they will have a copy of Thai flyer (I think) and that has adverts by many many of Thailands air modelling crowd..
Model heli flying has become loads cheaper.. Mini and micro electrics and contra rotating makes indoor flyers possible so you can learn with very cheap ones before building up.. Thailands always a little bit behind the cutting edge stuff but the elctric bits all come out of china so there no so inflated.

I was visiting a friend of my girlfriend in BKK, her husband had alot of RC models in the appartment and he's thai aswell. Thai does not mean poor, there are alot of wealthy thai people mate and to afford some RC models doesnt mean you have to be a millionaire (In any currency)

There are lot of cheap rc helicopters in Central, Tesco Lotus etc.
I actually got one myself but its not working properly, so I got disappointed. It's body is rotating in standby and the screw that adjust it doesnt help.

thats the problem with the crap quality ones the torque rolling is not controllable by the tail rotor and the rotor isnt synched to increase speed with the head rotors.. They are essentially junk, No gyros etc..
If you see one with contra rotating blades (2 sets one above other) they can cancel each others torque.. Something like an XRB sky robo is actually very flyable and controllable so it seems..

I saw a Futaba sign in Bangkok a few years ago, I believe it was near Prathum (?) electronics market. There are also fairly active R/C clubs there, some searching on the internet will uncover them I'm sure. For an R/C helicopter, I'm assuming you are not talking about a toy (?) so expect to spend some real $ and spend time to learn, they are not that easy to fly. It would be very wise to have someone that knows how to fly one teach you. Happy Autorotations

You got the cheap 2-channel Dragonfly?
That one will never be able to fly, only hop up and turn, and set down again.
If you are lucky!!
I got it in Phuket, a lady from Bangkok was with me and hagggled the price down to 1000 bath, but I see it in Bangkok for up to 2500 bath.
But it is just a non-functional toy.
I broke some glasses in my room with it, it took a dive in the pool, and finally it ended in a tree before I gave up!

A really decent radio controlled model shop is at
223 Hi Bia Trung HCMC Vietnam.
I have been so many times to nam and for the first 6 years always stayed at 223A Hi Bia Trung Street. Saw this shop next door everyday. Models are not my thing, but I was into it when I was much younger so I know what is what. There was some great stuff in this shop. Proper stuff not all this 5 minutes til broke stuff you see in Big C. If you are in HCMC check it out it is about 10 min ride out from the centre

In Pattaya, Second Street, there is also a very good shop with R/C equipment, toys and also very serious (and expencive) models.
But I find that the prices are almost as they are in Norway, so buying here in Thailand is not smart.
You loose the warranty with the local shops in Norway, should anything break (and it does!).
