There's no way I'm going to carry a passport or a copy of it with me, you're lawfully allowed into Thailand, that's what the Visa represents.

Many countries int he world state that travellers and non residents need to carry thier passport at all times.. Thais have thier ID cards, the passport is ours.

Got stopped in Patong one time. They were hoping that I'd have no drivers license with me. All I was wearing was a helmet and shorts and flip flops, I'd just been for a swim. They were quite disappointed when I was finally able to produce mine after much shuffling around and rummaging under my motorbike seat.

One time heard of a bust on Q bar in Bangkok where they drug tested everyone and checked passports etc.
Not sure what they did with the inevitable folks who were sans passport.

I was a naughty boy too and overstayed my visa. Had to pay a 7400 baht fine at the airport.
After reading this thread I'd never do that again.

One thing is having a copy of the passport and visa enough to be sure of no problems if stopped these days?

Check out my post #11 on this thread, a bit dated and maybe only specific to Patong but I have mates travel all over Thailand with a copy and never had a problem. It's all down th the MIB on the day I guess- if they want money they'll get it one way or the other. on the other hand if theya re satisfies you may not get hassled. TIT.

Man, I have enough problems with things bulging through my pants while walking around Thailand, now I have to worry about a passport.

Usually with the MIBs I just look them straight in the eye and they kinda look the other way, I'm sure they can sense who has fear and who doesn't want to take any shitte.
