Have I been taken for a fool??

Well got to my hotel today and the bell boy recommended I go to a tailor for a suit. Now I have always wanted a fitted suit and planed to get one anyway so I say why not perhaps it will save me time as I leave on Friday.

So they send a taxi to pick me up after 45min drive I arrived at "james fashion"

Now my budget was 7000max.. well the sales guy there was very good at what he did and I ended up spending 12000 nearly double but believe it or not this was haggled down from 20000.

The question is I thick I may have over payed after reading some of the posts hear.

What did I get I hear you ask: 1 cashmere suit 2x shirts (cotton I believe) 1x spare trouser 2x ties

The quality of the material felt quite good he said at first it was from the medium range then at the end he said it was his highest range. I did not believe him.

Also do they normally take full payment up front?? I gave him 10000 I said he will get the rest on completion. He was not happy with that at all.

By the way he said it will be ready tomorrow.. that seems very quick to me.

So have a been a mug?

way way too much... This si coming from someone who doesnt wear suits but have dealt with tailors for others and

2 piece suit trousers and waistcoat and simple cotton shirt. (no jacket, mates wedding out here).. Done in linen was 3500.. Could have been much cheaper with different material (think 2 - 2.5k).. Say 1k for a jacket makes 4.5k for a 3 piece.. Of course material is everything, and I would always advise to spend extra on getting really really good fabric.. But even very top end.. 6 - 8k is high I am thinking, that would have to be really good fabric and a really good tailor.

Also 10k deposit with 2k left ?!?! Wheres his incentive to do it right ?? Hes already paid nearly double in deposit.. I would be 2k deposit with the rest on completion..

Thing is.. If someone bargains that poorly.. Do you reckon they will make him a good suit ?? And whats he to do if they dont.. Keep his 2k back ??

Spending 12k if your sure the material is imported and top quality.. Fair enough.. If all the detailing has been super spelled out and no shortcuts (cuff buttons).. again fair enough.. But run of the mill BKK tourist tailoring.. Its high..

Must admit I missed the 2 trousers extras tho..

Gee, here I was anticipating a dicey thread about some guy being made a fool by the BG he was madly in love with, and gave loads of dosh to, and it is just a thread debating the price of a 3-pc. suit! What a letdown!!

well if it was an italian cashmere/wool blend fabric with the tailoring styled, cut, hand stitched and fitted perfectly I would say it's at the top end but about right.....

having said that there are only a few places in the whole of BKK capable of doing that sort of work and if it was recomended by a bell boy the chances of this being one of them is very limited......

as always in LOS...do your homework and buyer beware

Has anyone used that company before? Sounds like I have paid over the odds. But I must admit this was no run of the mill tailor shop in the back streets of Bangkok. It looked like a very classy joint.

He showed me other receipts where people had paid 50000 -60000 for 3 suite 3x trousers and ties

Is there anything I can now or do I do I just live and learn.

Well I have just come back from my fitting I was a bit apprehensive about going back after some of the comments that I read.

But I must say I was very impressed as they where very proffesional. I was not leving until I was sattisfide there was about 4 of them helping me.

Now I'm no expert but the material did feel like really good quality and craftsmanship looked good too the material was selected from the high end of his selection the garment fitted well although I did make 1 or 2 minor adjustments.

So all in all I'm quite happy as I believe the same garment would have cost double if not more in the UK.. well when I get back I will compare prices.. oh and I did get a free tie.

They said it will be delivered later this evening as I'm leaving tomorrow morning.

Patnut,

I have used a tailor in a large hotel complex in Patong several times. On my last visit seven months ago I bought a Cashmere suit with two pairs of trousers plus four LS business shirts. I paid 8900 baht which is probably more than I could get elsewhere but I find that the quality and service are excellent. The location possibly inflates the price but can also give comfort to the buyer as I would imagine good standards would need to be upheld. I only pay on completion which after minor adjustments is about three to four days.

I am comfortable and happy with what I pay. If you are happy with what you have acquired then don't get too hung up about it.

By the way your taxi ride was probably added into the price too. I assume you didn't pay yourself and the Bellboy would have got some commision. It all adds up.

Hi Patnut,
I've had stuff made from them many times since back in 93. Always gave good service and plenty of Singa beer while in the shop.

I've paid around 15K THB for a full suite, 3 trousers, 3 shirts, and if you want ties, plenty to choose from no cost. Also free hotel pick up and return for any vist or fitting.

I found that of course you beat them down on any price. I asked around and spoke to people who had been before, and know the average costs.

Never had any problem with items from there, and still wear some of those trousers. All kept in good condition after many washing etc, and for the money spent, was well worth it. I now on occasions pop in and get either 2 trousers or shirts made, as the old ones are not shrinking with my weight loss, so new clothes are ordered.

They assign a registration number and keep your measurments, so that if you want, you can call them up and have them make and ship out additional items if you require. I never have used this service, as I find that in 2-3 days in BKK, you have it all done.

One thing is to never tell any Tailor when your leave BKK, always say your around for a few days, so that if there is a problem, you have further time to get the fitting right. I have known there can be good and bad in that industry, stories of one sleve too long than the other, but never had any problem with my order or any of my travelling friends that have also used this Tailor.

One of my friend for Oz when we travelled, cut a picture of a womans business suite and top, and asked if they could make similar design as the picture. Not a problem, and the finished item was identical and about a tenth of the price if bought in Oz.

In regards to paying, I always gave them a small deposit and paid after final fitting. After they know you have shopped there before, you can pay all at the end, like I do now.

Thanks Maverick most of the people who say I've paid to much have not been to an establishment like this before and prefer to stick to some of the cheaper back street tailors.

I was willing to pay the price for a good quality suit at first I did think I payed over the odds as I read people getting suits for around 6-8000 bht but after seeing the end result I'm more than happy they did a great job.

I even went out in London to compare and found that if I had bought a similar suit hear I would have paid more than double, so I'm happy and would consider going back there again.

Obviously I will do some research before my next visit to see if another tailor could match the same quality for a cheaper price. Thanks.

Seems like you lucked into a good place.. Well done..

As you have sussed I think the majority of the 4k - 6k suits are coming from the real lowball places.. Go up to 8k plus and you can get good stuff but the real upper end will of course be more..
