Asian Cup Football in BKK - July 2007
Hey boardies,
The Asian Cup Football is on in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam through July. And when I say football, I mean soccer, just for all the North Americans in the house (many Aussies use the term as well).
The Australian team, the Socceroos, has been drawn in a group with Thailand, Oman, and Iran. Games will be played in BKK at the Rajamangalah (sp?) national stadium. Whoever tops the group (most likely Australia) will then play a quarterfinal in BKK - then a prospective semi-final in Malaysia. The final is to be played in Jakarta at the end of July.
I bring this to your attention for two reasons. One, BKK will be over-run by drunken and lecherous Aussies for the middle part of the month so beware! I estimate up to 10,000 will go, maybe more, and on non-match days will no doubt be drinking and mongering with the best of you. And probably on match days as well.
Also, tickets to the games are still available and cheap - could be some good quality international football for all you pommies and other eurotrash to attend. Let me know if you are interested and I can fill you in with more details.

Judging from ticket sales to the Thailand Australia game at Thaiticketmaster.com in the designated Australian supporter bays there would be about 8000 tickets sold already - the Thai bays are still pretty empty so it's not Thais buying these seats either.
Football is huge in Oz now and a lot of people love the WC in Germany so much they want more. And Thailand is closer, cheaper, and some would say more fun as well. And game tickets are dirt cheap compared to Germany - 100-800bht. I have already bought tickets to all games including semi final in Malaysia and final in Jakarta (the final cost me 9USD so if we don't make it, it doesn't hurt my wallet very much).
The Green and Gold Army http://ggarmy.com is doing packages but many (like me) are travelling independently..
So prepare for the Aussie onslaught chaps!

If Australia tops their group, I think they/we stay in Bangkok for the Quarter-Final.
So maybe there's an ooptunity for a visit a bit later on in July/August.

That's right - the quarter final is on in BKK on the 21st July. Semi in Malaysia on the 25th, Final in Jakarta on the 29th.

Australian Support
A group of us are coming up in July for a few weeks. We've organised ourselves independtly rather than a package. We've got tickets for the 3 group games and the Q/F.
There has been quite a lot of interest in Perth and it appears that a decent number will be travelling up for the football. Both SIA and Thai Air flights are heavily booked around the 6th and 7th.
It looks like there should be plenty of support for the lads which is great.

Okay, just wondering if it was on the 'Pattaya side' of town, and how long it would take from the final whistle after 90 minutes to get to Walking Street.

I know a lot about football but only a little about Thailand - I thought Pattaya was several hours away by cab from BKK?

The stadium is in the suburbs, north east of central Bangkok or north west of the airport. I would guess about 2.5 hours to Pattaya
