Bangkok(sukhumvit) hotels

I am visiting Thailand mid-August and will be staying mainly in Phuket, but the first few nights in Bangkok which I am unfamiliar with. I want to stay at a hotel that is centrally located to any tourist attractions during the day but also near the district with bars and go-go clubs. I am not looking for the cheapest hotel as I know Bangkok has some seedy areas but I also don't want to spend a fortune. My friend says I need to stay near the Sukhumvit?? area. Any suggestions from previous experience.

I have always been very comfortable at the Majestic Suites ( http://www.majesticsuites.com/main.html ) on Sukhumvit.

It is very clean, excellent staff, and guest-friendly.

The cheaper rooms are a bit on the small side, but the deluxe ones are good.

If you get a top floor room at the back, you can see into Nana Plaza, and it's a ten minute walk to Soi Cowboy.

I don't want to book a room and then find out there is a 1,000baht

The Nana is they will probably sort out a guest if required. Underneath they have a disco where all the girls go till closing then they just hang out in the lobby downstairs it's pretty mad worth a look for a night or two.
Most people tending towards Majestic Suites not far from Nana plaza better rooms but about 1500 bht a night.
