Warm clothes

As you know and Buddha and the Dutch embassy permitting, my GF will fly home with me this coming February.

As the temperatures will be rather cold here (at least for her), we may use our time in BKK to do shopping for warm clothes.

I know it is quite an odd question to ask for that in a tropical country like LOS, but I want to get her some clothing for the first week or so, to avoid her freezing. Also because she is quite petite and in Holland she will have to look on the childrens departments.

Any of you can recommend me some places where we could go for warm cloths, etc?

Yeah, when my wife came over in the middle of December last year she just bought herself closed shoes, a pair of socks and a warmer jacket in Thailand (edited: actually the jacket she already had before).

The rest was all WinterWonderLandShopping in the UK - phew, paeng mak mak :-) Poor Nanook 5555

I must say, it was a funny sight at first seing her walking around in socks.

edited: BTW Nanook, the folks up country do actually have warm cloth. Last year in September paeh ran around in a thick winterjacket, a wool hat and gloves on in the evenings. He was complaining that it was getting colder:-)

Theres lots of availability of warm gear here and they also can layer up with multiple layers of nice stuff at much more reasonable pricing than back in Holland. Also I have no idea how petite your lady is but Kim had a very hard time finding clothes (jeans especially) in her size.. She honestly used to shop in the childrens section sometimes !!!

Get her to load up here and finish it off back there.

bloody hell Frank - warm clothes, ha - you'll need to buy her an Artic Parker and thermal underwear in Holland, take it over to LOS for her cos as soon as she steps of the plane she'll probably turn into an ice block (from memory of my 12 month stint in Holland) - and I dont think you'll be wanting that to happen eh Frank, wink, wink......55555555

Well Les, as you know every disadvantage has an advantage too...

If she feels stone cold, at least it provides me with a good excuse to make her feel warm and hot again... 555555555.....

Platinum fashion Mall - definitely sections that wholesale winter selection (and foodcourt is ok and for me an excuse to go to panthip )

be prepared to pay a bit more then the standard thai clothing price as it is more material

fot TV:

I lived right next to Platinum and Panthip.... Platinum have a wide selection of utter crap... If thats what you want then go buy there.

If not, wait untill you get to Holland so she wont look like a total misfit once you get to Holland.

My teelak and I will be going to MBK near the stadium station for her key pieces of cloths for English April weather. Upstairs they have some good deals and the quality is good. downstairs its mostly falang priced stuff so don’t bother with that. as for the rest of the cloths, we'll go to bkk market on the outskirts of town, they have ultra good deals on every type of cloths imaginable. Talking 150 baht for nice jackets etc

so one thing i touched on that maybe people are not taking into account is fashion
i'd rather my gf buys her clothes here, in Canada
see what other girls are wearing and make her choices of what she likes

you have to remember, now buying winter clothes is a whole new world to them. they may need some guidance!!! 5555

the wife left the thai "winter" when she came to oz.
she told me she had bought 2 good jackets from china at the market, my initial thoughts were the jackets would be good for a cold ride on the motorcycle and not an atlantis winter.
the 2 jackets were superb, and are very warm, the cost was 299 bt each.

the biggest problem was getting her good quality boots, she had her uni-boots for wearing with long coats, but boots for going to the bush or up a few hills were much harder to find.
small size boots are very expensive, got some good quality ones at about
5200 bt, but of course try telling her that was a good price.

gloves she bought at the weekly travelling market for 10 bt a pair went by the wayside early on in her first winter, she did not like the idea of wearing thermal gloves inside of good quality leather gloves, but a few cold mornings walking on the beach sorted that out.

good quality thermal hat to keep the ears warm, plus a good thermal scarf, completed the picture of a slightly tan skinned christmas smurf.

one thing i am glad for is she does not like the "japper fashion", i love the japper fashion to look at, but its not for her.

A thought, with the full disclosure that I have NOT gone through this particular issue:

Two assumptions. First, there exist here in the US professional shoppers. Presumably Holland is similarly blessed. Second, you will be spending A LOT of money outfitting your lass.

But marc26 touches on perhaps THE issue here: fashion. Women will freeze, starve, bleed to death before stepping outside in the wrong outfit.

A solution? Research and find a personal shopper who specializes in Thai, er, "transplants." A tad specialized, one suspects, so broaden the criteria. Maybe an Asian personal shopper or one who lived in the Far East. When you have found this lady, retain her, have in-depth discussions, find out if she knows Thai culture or some approximation thereof. Then, get her in touch with your lady. Pay for the (daily?) phone calls, &c. Make sure she and your lady click... to your lass the personal shopper is her best friend.

Select a series of images of your lady to give the personal shopper. Then, have your personal shopper draw up outfit ideas, photograph them (or scan the images) then email to your lady. Let her get a feel, as it were.

This is a big project. Approach it as such and you will likely save a lot of money. And ease your lady's adjustment to your Winter Wonderland.

My 0.75 baht.

Thermal long johns and vest is what your girl needs. You can get them in any outdoor sport shop and she can still wear fashionable street clothes.

P.S. Dont you think the very petite and feminine Thai ladies look great in mens shirts?

i have come up with a hilarious idea!! 5555

if my gf gets her visa when she goes this week, we agreed she would buy just some warm things for the plane ride and will go on a big shopping spree the day she gets here in Vancouver

so i am going to go to a Salvation Army and buy the most hideous looking warm clothes and boots and wrap them up all nice and when she comes i will tell her i suprised her and bought her all new clothes for her

this will be priceless 5555

and then i can just give them back, so i am basically make a charitable contribution also
