If you go to the taxi meter counter - yes.

No.

I've not had this experience, I have given over 100baht before and usually after the 2nd toll payment the driver has gone to give me the 30baht change but I just say "tip for you".

I've mentioned that I usually talk to the bell hops or barmen to get them to arrange a taxi for me and when I have done, I have given them 50baht. If you do this, always remember to get them to confirm that it is on the meter, repeat it if necessary.

Thanks Diz.

My reference to the "bell hop" was to find out whether Dbaron had offered a tip for having his luggage taken to his room.

What is a reasonable tip for this service?

Nels,
I must have been lucky.
Arrived 23/3/08 as you cna see above.
Went straight to the taxi meter satnd and paid 300 plus tolls plus 3o baht tip = 400 baht. Not much less than you about same same.
Don't think I got charged the 50 baht at desk though.

Regards

DB

Was the airport tax part of your 300B?

Is it difficult to get coin change at the currency exchange booths at the airport to cater for all the change you'll need?

How did you find the rates there compared to down town?

I suppose if you don't carry the correct change then you end up paying more than you planned.

How much did you tip the bell hop at the Classic Place hotel?

CM

Did not pay any 50 baht airport tax as they did not ask for it or I would have. It was 400 baht all up. 300 meter taxi, 70 for 2 tolls, and I gave 30 bat tip.
Rtaes down town are okay but my kids wanted to catch tuk tuks all the time so that cost me a little more than taxis not that I minded.
Try to give exact change if you can but I did not have a problem with drivers saying they had no change. Everytime okay.
Tipped the 2 guys that bought up our luggage 20 baht each.
They were nice guys so no problem.

Regards

DB

agree it is strange that policy would change so quickly.....perhaps the desk gals are doing a shifty from time to time in conjunction with drivers....perhaps its only late at night...dunno...can only report what happenned on my last 2 experiences...first one was about the same date as dbaron..seconnd one was later

We are all talking about BKK airport....Suvarnabumi...aren't we and not Don Muang?

yep I am talking about Swampy.

perhaps the girls are indeed doing a shifty. Do you speak any thai ? Try that next time and you will get the real deal.

Or do you wear loud floral patterned shirts, shorts and white socks with sandals as part of your travelling attire ? That seems to bring out those "special" deals that the Thais love to give to the tourists.
