First Time Visitor to BKK

Hi guys,
I am visiting Bangkok for the 1st time in early July on business for about a week and I intend to spend 2 weekends there and possibly a couple of days in Pattaya.I am staying in the Shangri La hotel in BKK and I was wondering if any of you know how far the Shangri La is from Soi Cowboy and Nana, is it easy to get there and back and if the SL is a girl friendly hotel. Are there any decent pubs near the SL hotel?

Cheers Guys

Hi King N,
Was there a few weeks ago and it is really quite easy to find your way around if you use taxi meters or tuk tuks. They all know where to go.
However from your hotel to Nana to most of the sex district head down Silom Road and turn right into Bumrung Muang Road which becomes Sukhumvit Road about 5 or 10 minutes down you will find what you are looking for.
Wall to wall girls and of course Nana plaza etc. Patpong is also good for A Go Go bars if you are into them otherwise Nana and of course the fl's on the street.
Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Regards

DB

That can also be a problem.
Many of these taxi drivers want to take you to venues (like soapies) where they get a commission ... which you obvious will be paying for.

Know where you are going, i.e. Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy, etc. and they will know the way. Always make sure they use the meter - ALWAYS.
Not exactly sure where your hotel is, but based on dbaron's directions the cab fare should be 60-80 baht

Have fun.

I too will be making my first trip to Thailand later in the year. This forum sho nuff ain't mentioned in "Lonely Planet Thailand". In picking a hotel----are there any in BKK that offer the convenience of "it all" (i.e., GF, location, quality, etc) for those that aren't budget conscious? Is a $200USD hotel worth it?

THE SHANGRILA HOTEL is vet close to silon road and thus is close to patpong to get to nana plaza and soi cowboy involves a 150 bhat taxi ride its not so close .

JW Marriott, Sheraton Grande, Westin Grande

all great hotels right in the action
all girl friendly

try priceline and bid about 100-120 usd for 5 star and may get any of these hotels for that price this time of year

i prefer a more upscale hotel in BKK, especially as a 1st timer. it is nice to have a little retreat coming back from the congestion of BKK

If you do not have a budget issue then try the Sheraton Grande.
One of the best hotels I have ever stayed.
Go there over and over again myself!

for around US$100 you can stay at Dynasty In Grande on Soi Sukhomvit 4....it is a great GF hotel with all you could possibly want right on the doorstep of Nana

make sure you get the GRANDE though...the standard Dynsaty Inn is a very poor cousin

Bangkok trip

Hi guys,

I am travelling to Bangkok and Pattaya for a few days in July .I was wondering what the P4P scene is like at the moment. How much can I expect to pay for ST and LT and is there any difference in prices between Bangkok and Pattaya. What bars / clubs are hot at the moment.

Cheers

ShangriLa is on Charoen Krung at the end of silom. Taxi to nana sans traffic would only cost 80B. chuck him 100 and start you evening with a good vibe.

As for the directions above, turning right at the top of Silom is Rama 4 and it certainly doesn't turn into Sukhumvit.

Without confusing you with short cuts, from the shangriLa I'd expect to go up Sathorn rather than Silom, right at the top, down Rama 4, keft at Southern Ratchadapisek past the Queen sirikit Convention Centre and then you are at Asoke for cowboy, or left at the junction to roll into Nana.

Thats Charoen Krung, Chinatown? I had trouble getting a Taxi back to Sukhumvit (Nana) from there one night last trip, every Taxi I stopped refused to take me to Nana for whatever reason. I was sober too... I Eventually got one after a fair bit of walking. Its also meant to be one of the oldest roads in Bangkok (Useless bit of info )

Charoen Krung does start in Chinatown, but the part with the ShangriLa is not.

The ShangriLa is right next door to Saphan Taksin BTS startion at the end of Sathorn, between where Sathorn and Silom join Thanon Charoen Krung.

It is indeed one of the oldest roads in Bangkok. English name is New Road.
