Silom - any good?

Anyone any reccos for this area? Arriving early June.

By the way the 'ST' prefix of my board name doesn't stand for saint. So you know what I'm after.

And yes I did try the search.

Silom is a nice area with a lot of good restaurants, however, I hear mixed statements as to whether the hotels are guest friendly.
The area is my prefer ed when I am not looking for P4P.
From the hotel district of Silom you are a 10-15 minute walk from Patong (50 baht taxi) and I am sure you can find ST room along with your ST companion.
Same-same for Nana or Soi Cowboy which is an 80-100 baht taxi ride from Silom or a short trip on BRT.

Lumpini Park is nice to wander around in the afternoon. It's a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Suk for an hour or 2.

Sorry, don't know anything about hotels down that way...

Thats good to hear as I'm also a bit of a foodie. Any reccos MrDK? Thai / Japanese / Fusion especially. Been looking at the restaurant guides online but nothing beats a personal experience.

There are three I can recommend:

Blue Elephant near the Silom BTS station: Blue Elephant Bangkok Restaurant and Cooking School. Great food at very reasonable prices (4-700 baht per person), plus beverages at slightly inflated prices. Reservation recommended.

The Dome / Sirocco restaurants: The Dome Bangkok. An outdoor/indoor restaurant on the 66th floor of the State Tower in Silom. A view to die for and good food, but expensive (1k+ per person), plus beverages at equally high prices. There is also an outdoor bar there. If you go for the view have a few drinks there before or after a dinner else where. Keep in mind that this place has dress code. I have seen people in jeans, though not technically allowed. Shorts . If you go here I'll recommend making a reservation days before.

The third I don't know the name or the street, but I have attached a map. From Holiday Inn go down the road perpendicular to Silom rd. It is on the 1st or second road to the left about 100 meters down (total walking distance from HI ~300 meters). You can see their American Express Accepted sign from the corner. Great local restaurant with awesome food at low prices. Beverages other than wine are at on par prices, but you'll pay through the roof for wine (2k+ bath bottle).

Down near the river there are a bunch more. The three above give you a goo variety from simi up-scale Thai at fair prices to the cosmopolitan Thai at high prices to fantastic back-street Thai with great atmosphere.

"222 Silom Road" is a nice enough Restaurant......easy to find, given it's name as well !

I have been to the Blue Elephant. In my opinion it is an overpriced tourist restaurant with just average Thai food. I once invited a Thai family there and felt like an idiot with all the obvious tourist decor.

Best food you can get is the food places along the riverside in Bangkok that's where the middle class Thais go.

Funny I did the same thing; actually it was a group of Thai business associates and they enjoyed it very much.
Do agree that the restaurant cater somewhat to tourists.

I like Baan Khanitha.

Go up Soi Convent from Silom to the other end (Sathorn) where Christ Church is.

Cross on the footbridge to the restaurant on the corner of Soi Suan phlu.

It's a Thai restaurant definately catering for foreigners, but plenty of Thai's eat there and there is an amount of fusion food on the menu.

Beef with Grapes is usually very good for example.

Quality is always consistant and prices are reasonable.

btw, if i could get away from Scirroco at 1000THB per head I'd eat there every day.

For high end accomodation, the best value for money would be the Sofitel Silom, IMHO:

It's the only 4/5 star hotel, I have ever stayed at in Bangkok, but I did do a lot of research beforehand. Using asiaroomdirect.com (or something like that), I got a standard room (very nice), for 3,500 baht per night. It's been a few years though. Since then, I have heard of people actually buying beds from the hotel (they are that nice), and shipped to their country.

As for ST though, it is not GF. A high end freelancer from CM2 or Spasso's will pass through easily, but not a standard gogo dancer or bargirl from Patpong unfortunately...
