IJ,
theres a huge difference when you are talking about these hotels. i always stay at westin grande, sheraton grande or jw marriott in BKK, and they are considered 5 star hotels on priceline.com, but when you get into the Peninsula, Oriental, and such, you are talking about far superior hotels. tops in the world

The Orinental should be one of the best, but very hard to get a tg with you in, even if you come together they will give you a hard time, if you not are married to the girl, a least that what i have been told.
So all in all i would go for the Peninsule if you dont care for the location, but shangri-la a second, close to the bts, and they have a great pool area, much bette,r than let say westinn.
BTW when i come back to crimbo i will stay at Westinn again a realy great hotel much better than JW, but JW have the best location.

bono,
ill probably just end up staying at the westin. i really love that hotel. i just wanted to try something new. but knwoing me, ill be roaming sukhumvit so might as well stay there!

If I am doing a couple of nights in BKK I am looking to try the president solitaire next time.. Suites with plasma TV's and all that jazz.. Fine for a couple of nights but if its 3 - 5 will probably be cheap and just use the Majestic suites..

Ask the Brit and US expats of BKK which is the best Hotel in the city. Usually only one reply “The Landmark”. Not cheap though.

hey guysm thanks for advice. i booked the jw marriott. i did priceline.com and you have to take what they give you in star category you pick. if you pick 5 star, you usually get either westin or jw marriott. i got it for 45usd less than advertised on their website

Yes friend I have stayed in Oriental and Peninsula. Love the Oriental for its sheer luxury, service and the environment. They have some nice restaurants there. Peninsula also a great place to stay. Both are very expensive for a budget traveler but exceptionally good with the family. you will love your stay if you go with your wife or other family members. These places are family oriented and we can not go and stay with those BG IMHO What ever it is Hotel Narai breakfast is still the best. its a Buffet and they will charge you Bht 450 (I think) if you are not staying there.
In Mandarin Oriental try the Riverside Terrace for a buffet dinner or The Veranda for Breakfast. Also they have a nice chinese food at China House. My favorite Sala Rim Naam. Thai dinning. Wonderful.
Go with your wife I am sure you will enjoy.

mandarin,
have you ever eaten at Le Bernadin. it is the french restaurant in Oriental. suppose to be one of the top ten restauarnts in the world. how do you think i would be percieved if i took a tg with me.
i told her i wanted to go there before, last year and told her shed really have to dress nice. i figured we would go buy a dress for her to wear. she told me she bought one and i was nervous because didnt know if it would be suitable for Le Bernadin. we ended up not going, but went to a beautiful italian restaurant and she blew me away with her dress. absolutley exquisite.
so what i am asking is how do you think i will be percieved goign with a tg that will be dressed very classy

I haven't tried le bernadin. missed it. Oriental has some great restaurants. My favorite is Sala Rim Nam because I am Thai food lover. also i have dinned in Ciao, Riverside Terrace and la Normandie. La normandie is a french cuisine and great night with the GF. They have some real great oregan Pinot Noir. Riverside terrace would be a great place for an early evening dinner and then retreat back to your room early Overall you will never be disappointed with the meal, service or the atmosphere. I will certainly try Le Bernadin next time. Thanks for the insider clue.
Re the dress, yes you make sure she is upto your standard. normally its very formal over there and you will be mixing with the Top tier thai clientale and decent farangs. If you go for a dinner lots of thai political heavy weights will be there with their family and friends. you don't want to be seen with a BG with 9" heels and tube tank top. Shoe is one important thing they always look. I am sure, with you she will be Ok.
I used to live and work in BKK for some time and our favorite place Peninsula and Oriental for the evenings. Oriental has a great tennis court. Another best there is the spa.
You can have some nice cakes and tea in peninsula.
A casual evening and a decent dinner with your GF try BedSupperClub.
Hope you will enjoy your stay in BKK. Wish you the best. If you need any info about BKK or Pattaya let me know and I will provide all the ifo I have.
hope to meet you all soon in MTB.
You have a great time Marc26.
