I know this movie has been out for a very long time , but I have just managed to get a copy(it has been re-released). It has over 5 hours of Bonus features , and can be watched in Dual Language (English dubbed or Thai with English sub-titles).

Excellent movie , well worth watching.

Send a message via ICQ to Nicke
Sounds great, I also wanted to buy this movie but the first release had no english subtitling. One of the best Thai movies I have seen. I saw it on cinema and they had subtitling there.

Will try to find it then... But Phuket is not the best place to find Thai movies on DVD thought.

Tom Yum Koong

If you guys enjoyed Ong Bak, then I would recommend
"Tom Yum Koong" Same 2 main actors in the leading roles.
Much more fun as half the film is shot in Sydney and its
interspersed with English. No english sub-titles though.

Apologies for opening up an old thread (??), but I just saw this movie (Ong Bak) the other night. Great show! The fight scene in the nightclub was pure class! The big guy that was lifting anything and everything and hitting the hero with! I was busting my sides laughing! One of the best fight scenes ever!

I will watch out for "Tom Yum Koong"

Ong-Bak - found at UK Tesco's

Came across this Thai film in the three-for-GBP15 section of a London Tesco's. Has Thai audio track and dubbed English plus English subtitles.

It's the tale of a villager, Ting (Tony Jaa), trained by the village in the 'ancient and dangerous art of Muay Thai' (errr...) by the local monk who once killed a man in the ring. When Bangkok bad-boy Don steals the head of the village's Buddha (Ong-Bak of the title), Ting is dispatched to the city to retrieve it and recover the fortunes of the drought-stricken village.

Basically it's good, simple country-folk vs big-city crooks. Another ex-villager and petty con-man and female friend leads Ting into Bangkok's Muay Thai underworld where Don's artifact-smuggling boss pitches him against, for some reason, mostly Farang fighters. A great deal of running and jumping over/under/through things ensue all around and about Bangkok. Familiar sites: The fight-club is just off Kahosan Road, a few glimpses of the area, but nothing you can easily recognise.

One Farang fighter tries to goad Ting into fighting with the line "Thai people are not strong enough. That's why Thai women come to my country, become ******s..."

Fans of the Bangkok tuk-tuk will enjoy the high-speed tuk-tuk chase (they must have run the film at least 50% overspeed) involving two-dozen tuk-tuks, most of which end up trashed. Beyond the setting, it's a pretty formulaic martial arts film but useful to get the ear attuned pre-tour and as a source of all those essential phrases you just don't get in your Lonely-Planet phrase book, like "motherf***er", "S**thead" and other terms you might find useful to speed you through Suvarnabhumi immigration...

I enjoyed the film, but must admit I didnt like the tuk-tuk chase scene...came over a bit cheesy esp at the end when they crash/blow up.

"Tom Yum Goong"(named after the hot shrimp soup) is awesome. It is called The Protector in US, The Warrior King in UK, and sometimes also Honor of the Dragon(which makes no sense at all). In LOS, it is also called "Ong Bak 2".

I bought a copy of the DVD in LOS last March, because the girl I took to Samui only likes to watch ghost movies and martial arts movies. She also claimed to be a good personal friend of Tony Jaa. Yeah, right, and Steven Seagal is my best buddy!

Anyhow, I wasn't expecting much, given her taste in films. We popped it in the DVD player and Tony Jaa proceeded to blow my mind. He has just amazing moves. Some awesome kicks I'd never seen before, and just brilliant athleticism. He also has a very likable personality, and though maybe not as funny as Jackie Chan, he's funnier than Jet Li, and at least the equal of either in his martial arts skills, IMHO. Read an interview with him. He is an icon in LOS, but still very a humble guy. He has a gift and a real work ethic that you seldom see in Thais, been studying martial arts since he was a kid, and his father was a Muay Thai guy, altho Tony goes way beyond Muay Thai with a form known as Muay Khotsam, IIRC. He is also skilled in Brazilian, and several other martial arts forms, but really wants to make the new Thai style known.

The movie is the story of a boy and his elephant. Very heart-warming, a little corny, but full of dynamite action, and some good laughs, and the super-evil bad guy, who is trying to take over the world is a KATOEY. Only in LOS!

The movie was supposed to be released in the US on August 25, and I saw a poster that said "Coming Atrraction" in a theater near here, but haven't seen the film come there yet. Maybe it was delayed. I'd like to see it on the big screen!

Don't miss it!!

BTW, the DVD I saw in March, that I bought in Samui, had English subtitles. the guy who played the Australian cop, who is Thai, was also very funny, and there is a real cute Thai babe in the movie, too.

Ive had this dvd on pre-oreder here in the UK for over a year now. Still hasn't been released. The date keeps on going back and back. Now it's 'due' on the 30/10/06. The US release on DVD has gone completley off the calendar. Knew I should of bought it when I was over there the last couple of times!

The Protector(Tom Yum Goong) started playing today at local theaters here in the US. It will be a few months before it gets to DVD.

I can remember reading in a magazine when I was over there last about it coming to theatres soon. That was last year now. I can't see why it keeps slipping, as it already been dubbed/subtitled. Must be a finance thing!
