Thumbs down C'mon Hollywood

I saw a trailer tonight for the Pink Panther starring Steve Martin.

Now I've always liked Steve Martin, but why The Pink Panther. Why remake a movie that was done perfect the first time. There is no other Peter Sellers and I can't for the life of me figure way Steve Martin would want to come in and do an imitation of him.

The whole idea of remaking classics which, although might make a good movie is just a shortcut to box office profit. Where is the new thinking. Do we really need the Dukes of Hazzard or Bewitched?

Oh I forgot....Gay Cowboys, that's new.

I'm a big movie guy and I have to admit I haven't been watching as much because most of the new stuff coming out is crap. I've been watching a lot of new foreign films via Netflix these days. Hollywoods been getting a lot of it fresh ideas from the foreign stuff out there

I really like to watch animated flicks, as I'm starting to get into some 3d modelling, and it really amazes me what these guys can do. Just watched Madagascar the other day, and the water effects around the ship and under water where just shit hot.

Anyone else watch flicks and think about what went on behind the scenes while making it.

I buy a lot of DVD's just to see the special features. I just recently got Kingdom of Heaven because the special edition had some history and documentaries on the special features disk.

C'mon Hollywood

Some remakes are ok i think, like :

Seven Samurai --> The magnificiant Seven
Yojimbo (Kurosawa) --> Fistful of Dollars / Last Man Standing (Bruce Willis)
Shall we dance (japanese one) --> Shall we dance (Gere and J-lo)

Think its worse when hollywood remake their own films.

I thought that Gone in 60 Seconds was ok for a remake.I've been trying to think of others but I'm drawing a blank.
It's the cartoons made into movies with real actors that make me cringe. The Flintstones and Scooby Doo come to mind.Talk about running out of movie material!!
There's a remake of Bullitt in the works, but it's supposed to be a continuation of the origional story.(Frank Bullitt's son I think played by Brad Pitt.)Oh well,I guess I can sit through a 21st century Mustang /Charger car chase.

Anyone thats been round my place knows I am a movie nut.. While its great to be able to pick up 100 baht DVD's (and time to sift out the screeners and crap copies) its also annoying that you only seem to get the blockbuster type films..

Ordering online just becomes REAL expensive.. Cost + shipping + 39% import duty on the total order + lots getting nicked from the mail !!!

stevem,

i love alll the animated films and do wonder what goes on to make these films. i think pixar/dreamworks productions are some of the finest out there. then you have the final fantasy with so much detail...inserting each strand of hair one by one(1000's).....a art form in it's own right IMO.

The work done on appleseed was good also.. Tho thats more the 2d cell shading stuff than the 3d modelling (done in 3d rendered to 2d)..
