With the recent threads on gambling, sports bets, HYIP's and other things I think some here may like this..
Sometimes you just know by the cover and title that a book will be interesting.. Well I saw this and was immediately curious so ordered it from Amazon. True to form if its something you want it gets ballsed up, and its been since early Dec since I have been waiting for this order (amazon screw up then postal over Christmas and NY).. Finally arrived a day or two ago and dived straight in.
Amarillo Slim is billed as the greatest gambler who ever lived and it has to be said his exploits do make for great reading, nearly killed by Pablo Escobar, beating Willie Nelson for 300k at dominoes, playing Evel Kanievel at golf using a hammer, Minosota Fats at one pocket with a broom handle, Bobby Riggs at table tennis with iron skillets, making millions many many times over, songs written about him, winning the world series of Poker many times over, etc etc etc.
The book is written in a very one on one folksey tone.. He addresses the reader directly and calls you nieghbour, partner, etc throught the text. Somehow this draws out his character is a good way and you geta great feel for the personality and style of the man as well as his exploits. You can almost hear his Texan drawl through the writing.
He manages to tell extreme tales with enough modestly and humility that it doesnt come out too boastful even when he obviously has done some amazing things. In many ways the style reminds me of the 'Confessions of a Stock Operator' I recommended and passed the ebook round last month..
Really enjoyable read that unfortunately only lasted me a day...

Gets a 9/10 for me and left me smiling many times over..
Now onto Ugly Americans (I love it when the amazon boxes arrive !!)..
