Book :: Ugly Americans

Wall another out of the Amazon order bit the dust...

Ugly Americans by Ben Mezrich is another financial thriller based on fact in a very similar vien to his Bringing down the house about the MiT Blackjack guys..

Very enjoyable, fast paced which is a blessing and a curse, it took only an afternoon / evening to tear through it, but it was due to being a cant put down page turner.

Has quite a bit of the action taking place in Japans Roppongi nightlife districts and in water houses and brothels etc.. Certainly the wheeling and dealing through Asia's (Honkers / Sillypore as well as Osaka / Tokyo all feature) sex and financial districts give it some bite.

I get the impression the author plays a little bit fast and lose with the facts (obviously a lot is done to obscure names and people due to Yakuza and crinimal actions etc) but the simpe fact is its a great riveting read from start to finish dealing with sex, crime, mad amounts of money.. Working for Joe Jett bringing down Kidder Peabody, to then working for Nick Leason bringing down Britains oldest bank (Barings of course) to then perhaps one of the bigger plays ever in financial history that would either make or break the Hedge he was working in has to be one hell of a resume..

Definately want to go to Japan afer reading it

Yeah for me theres the added that 'interesting' books are harder to come by out here.. Pulp thrillers etc are around second hand but I need to organize Amazon orders etc for interesting stuff..

Wont be ripping through any more though my next ones are an economic text and the 1000 page (dense small type) Musashi, japanese historical samurai epic.. That should slow me down..

Nope not read that one.. Let me know what you think..

I have heard the 'smiles' trilogy from him is pretty good.. Not much of a fan of his detective (calvino ??) fiction but generally read any Thai based stories..

Have some Japanese stuff to get through currently, the 47 Ronin story, Masushi and the An@lects of Confusius..

i grab all the thai fiction books. i wasnt a big fan of christopher g moore at 1st but ive warmed up to him. i actually like the calvino character. kinda reminds me of spenser for hire, dont know if many people will understand that reference though. plus im living in his home country now, so have to support him, eh

Hi Paul,

Don't forget to count me in also. I will just have to make sure I can work it around my teaching schedule.

Paul I remember reading that post about that trip but you guys never made it to the clubs. Some many VG and they all get freaky with each other when dancing. It was crazy this past weekend with the chinese new year.

Seafox where do you live?
