Got to be Saving Private Ryan. Very realistic. The director really makes you feel you're involved in the action.

It is Deer Hunter for me, too, as NO. 1 war movie. The performance by Christopher Wallken is amazing. DeNiro is fantastic, and Streep excellent. Loads of good supporitn characters, as well.
Next comes Apocalypse Now. The eerieness of the the gunboat going up the river in the steamy tropical jungle, quiet one moment, hell breaking loose the next is one of the great movie scenes of all times. Brando is a little over the top, but it is a surreal movie, and the reality of war must be surreal at times, as well. And who can forget Rbt.Duvall, "Ah! I love the smell of napalm in the morning!"
It is tough to pick No 3. But since it hasn't been mentioned yet,and is in my top ten, I would have to include The Young Lions. One of Brando's great performances, when he was truly in his prime, and excellent work by Montgomery Clift, as well.

Real War vs. Hollywood
Greetings--
My choice would be Das Boot. No glamours babes, choriographed explosions, sparking bullets, or politically-correct but statistically-implausible "placements" (such as the Star of David grave marker so conveniently situated behind the aging hero's shoulder at the end of Private Ryan). Merely a disparate group of kids, scared to death, filthy beyond imagination, who meld into a single machine in order to survive.
I liked Deer Hunter and Apocalypse for the storytelling but, well, the US Army (nor the USMC where I served 74-78 in the Infantry) simply did not operate like that. I like the James Bond series but realize it is Hollywood (or the British equivalent) and not the actual world of Operations.
The Longest Day is a classic but, again, hyped. Patton was realistic-- aside from their substitution of modern armor for WWII tracks which, like The Battle of Britain, was done quite subtly. The machines are merely tools for the young warriors, there is no need to dwell on them.
Near the top of the list would be the Tom Selleck movie, Ike: Countdown to D-Day. Made for TV, almost no "action" per se, but Selleck was born for that role.
My two cents, gents, I accept that I am most likely wrong.
As an aside: I worked as an extra in a number of productions, even have a brief scene wherein Helen Hunt and I are onscreen alone, together, very romantic. Right... The point is that one of the assistant directors in that particular movie (Pay It Forward) told me regarding the D-Day scene in Private Ryan: "That scene took three weeks to shoot."

Well, Capt., I don't need to tell you about Iraq, but there is a very excellent movie in theaters now which really tells the story of the Iraq war well and is one of the very good war movies by any standard. It is called "The War Tapes."
It is real-life film. They gave cameras to 3 guys from a unit of the Vermont National Guard Reserves, who took the film of themselves and comrades while shooting and getting shot at, relaxing, goofing around, talking to Iraquis(one of them spoke fluent Arabic) and, generally trying to figure out what the hell they were doing there. The things that happen to them, their antics, their thoughts, and the footage of their wives/Moms/GFs at home worrying about them, plus interviews with them after they get back to civilian life in the States, makes for a very absorbing and thought-provoking movie experience. No dull moments in this one.
I highly recommend "The War Tapes."

Triumph of the Spirit starring the aforementioned Dafoe ( not sure which brother), Life is Beautiful, and the movie with the young jewish boy who ends up in the Hitler youth--Europa?
Another film i really like is Jacobs ladder which starts off in Nam, and gets progressively stranger as the film progresses-one of my all time favourites..

"Empire of the Sun" is an outstanding movie. I think that is the one that Nicke meant when he said a movie named " The Sun"
However, I don't consider it a war movie, just as I don't consider "Schindler's List," a war movie. They are about events which happened during the war, i.e., the detention/death camps of the Japanese and Germans during WWII, but not about the actual war, i.e., fighting, men-in-arms, armed combat.
Another excellent movie of the "wartime" genre is " King Rat", about a prisoner-of-war camp in Singapore in WWII.
While we are on the subject of good wartime movies, " The Diary of Anne Frank" was a good one, too.

anyone seen "jarhead"......it's no das boot, deerhunter or Apocalypse now but it's a bloody good romp which shows the surreal/ridiculous nature of the gulf war with one hell of a pumpin' soundtrack......
and another gulf war fave for the list is 3 Kings with Clooney, Wahlberg, Ice Cube and Spike Jonz.....that is a modern classic antiwar film!!!
oh and by "Stalingrad" are we talking about "Enemy at the Gate" the sniper film starring Ed harris + Jude Law by Jean Jaques Arnaud.....if so that is brilliant and a classic
Did anyone ever see Volker Schlodorff's "The Tin Drum" ......the story of a little drumer boy in nazi Germany who refused to grow in protest at the war....probably my favourite antiwar film of all time.....
and for sheer beauty Terence Mallik's "The Thin Red Line" is a mysterious masterpiece........

BTW Petter "Das Boot" is was great film by a then very young upcoming direrctor Wolfgang Petersen and was his entree into Hollywood......he has since gone on to well and truly embrace the place....making such stinkers as "Poseidon" + Air Force One + "Troy" .... but has also made some other great films there including "In the Line of Fire" with Eastwood + Malkowicz......and "The perfect Storm" with Clooney + Wahlberg.......

Nid Noy's Faves
Das Boot is excellent. Petter, thanks for reminding me about Petersen's other film called "Stalingrad". Now that's a kicker. BTW, has nothing to do with "Enemy at the Gates", which is good - however pales in comparison to the depth of Stalingrad. It's freakin' crazy.
You gotta give props to the French film "Grand Illusion" for spawning all other prison camp breakout films: "Great Escape", "Stalag 17" etc.
How 'bout "Patton"? George C. Scott rocks in that one. "Dirty Dozen" is cool too.
Of course, "Apocalypse Now", "Platoon", "Full Metal Jacket", and "Deer Hunter" are great-all in about the same class. So is "Private Ryan". The mini-series, "Band of Brothers" has some damn good battle scenes very similar look to "Ryan".
"Bridge Over the River Kwai" is awesome.
"Kanal" a Polish flick about escaping the Nazis in a Jewish ghetto by hiding in the sewers. Scary! Kanal (1957)
Even scarier, "The Sorrow and The Pity" = Holocaust Hell. Warning: it's a documentary. Watch it with "Night in Fog" and have a super double bummer evening. On the other hand, don't watch those. Too damn depressing.
Have not scene "Jarhead" but was edited by my hero Walter Murch. He won Academy Awards for Sound on Apocalypse Now. He's editing something new with Francis Ford Coppola right down the street from me right now. Shhh. Don't tell anyone.
War SUCKS.

Jarhead is a good movie, but in no way in a class with most of the classic war movies mentioned on this thread. Actually, the real-life movie The war Tapes, which is in theaters now, reminded me a lot of Jarhead, but for me, The War Tapes is better, because it is live and happening now, so to speak, since it is real soldiers in current Iraq war.

Totally agree about 3 Kings. Another great antiwar movie, which is even more compelling in its' antiwar message is Johnny Got His Gun. for me, this is probably the strongest, most devastating antiwar movie ever made. It really hits you deep in your gut, and doesn't let go.

Agree. Tin Drum is outstanding. Thin Red Line is has incredibly beautiful look.

"Where eagles dare"
Great show! Must have seen it about 10 times... Brilliantly directed and acted, with great locations... Burton totally in charge.... Proper order!
They don't make them like that anymore.

The best Quote from a film about war, in my view is:
"I think WW2 is my favourite war"
Father to mother while watching a b/w war film in 'Small Soldiers'
Classic!

Seriously tho - if i had to fight in any war from history it would be WWII. It had probably the most legitimate 'reason' and the conditions compared to other wars you stood some chance to survive.
