Info

The Longest Day and A Bridge too Far were written by the same author, Cornelius Ryan. He collected first hand from people who were there docu style. He wrote another called The Last Battle about the fall of Berlin but nobody has filmed this yet. One great anecdote in this is where the Berlin Philharmonic play their last concert "Gotterdamerung" then all jump on a London double decker bus and drive off to surrender to the Yanks

Should be worth a look if they ever make it. I had six years in Berlin and loved every minute of it. Shouldn't imagine it was too nice during the "Last Battle" though!

Favorite War movies in order

1: Acopolypse Now
2: Full Metal Jacket
3: Stalingrad(Nice take on ther german winterwar in Russia)
4: Band Of Brothers(Not a film, but the best war miniseries ever)
5: Das Boot
6: Der Untergang(last Days of Hitler)good inside view.
7: Platoon
8: Battle of Gettysburg(American Civil war)
9: Savior(Oliver Stones masterpiece of the conflict in the Balkans)
10: Saving Private Ryan(On my 36'inch LCD home theater system, its stunning)

Only Thing that buggers me, is that in the not so far future, i have to switch them all out For a Blue Ray sytem, or HD DVD system.

Damn it forgot, "Deer Hunter", but that movie is out of comparison to any other, a whole different league

Downfall

Watched this last night on uk tv. Altough it has subtitles the performance of the actor who plays Adolf Hitler is rivetting. Last days in the Fuhrer Bunker based on the memoirs of Hitlers secretaryTraudl Junge.

My Faves - Enemy at the Gates, Blackhawk Down, Full Metal Jacket

Not so common - Gallipoli, Bat 21, Saints and Soldiers

Not Really a war movie - Life is Beautiful

They could have done better - Pearl Harbor (Michael Bay ruined what could have been an epic), The Great Raid (the book is outstanding however)

anyone seen Istvan Szabo's film "Sunshine".........not strictly a war movie but it covers the life of a wealthy jewish families struggle through 3 generations and the two world wars of the early 20th Century......

Ralph Fiennes plays the patriarch in 3 separate guises and genertions.....and Rachel Weiss is also stars.........

It is a wonderful movie.....full of the heights of joy and the deepest depression.....a real rollercoaster

Agree with Denver about Harry's Game, just hearing the theme tune gives me flashbacks to when I served in Belfast.

Another one I like is a bit more "off the wall" , M.A.S.H, for me it ties in both Army and Medical humour.
I agree the odd angry shot great movie ..action and a bit off a laugh as well.well worth a nother look might dig my old dvd out..

There is one war movie i havent seen on here yet (Well it might be on here but i could have just missed it) which i had forgotten about.

I was playing Call of Duty - finest hour on my xbox last night and did the Russian missions and then decided that i would dig a German war movie called Stallingrad out... It would have been better to watch it in German with English subtitles but never the less its a good war movie anyway.

Best war movie ?

Here you have a trailer
Trailers for Stalingrad (1993)

A depiction of the brutal battle of Stalingrad, the Third Reich's 'high water mark', as seen through the eyes of German officer Hans von Witzland and his battalion.
In a way its reappraise the role of the German soldier as victim. And was very
controversiel at that time (93)and made a lot of discussions.

I like the TV version from 2003 better

This movie now means a little bit more to me after moving to Germany. You feel for the Germans who didnt want to fight.. That were forced to be there... I was speaking to a German friend of mine and (i dont so much know for the big cities) but in the rural areas there was a lot of bad things that did happen to the Germans which didnt agree with Hitlers policies or the regime. Having spoken to my friend i found out a little bit more that some people in the village areas were happy when the English and the Americans came in because the felt liberated. But saying all this, this could be discussed in another post on another date. Also i havent seen the 2003 television version so i cant compare the 2.
