Best war movie ?
Was rental the last version of Das Boot,Directors Cut
last night,it must be one of the best war movies
i have seen.Have seen it two times before and still think its great.
Any others who have seen this movie ?
The plott is:It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so called "Battle of the Atlantic" to harass and destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. "Das Boot" is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions.

Best war movie ?
This is a a detailed look into the claustrophobic and terrifying world of a German U-boat crew hunting ships from undersea. Gritty, realistic, and peppered with black humour.
Wasent shure if you have seen it since its a German war movie, did get a lot of prices and mentions back in 81

Platoon is defo not bad. I think the sceneries of all Vietnam movies are just brilliant. Many of them are actually filmed in Thailand.
I also n-joyed very much Saving Private Ryan. Very realistic.

war films
loved das boot especially the music!! Favourite movie however is a little harder........hmmm liked the first hour of enemy at the gates about a sniper at Stalingrad- esp as Rachel Weicsz is in it grrrrr...the battle of britain-love the ketchup,633 squadron, the original all quiet on the western front, and the hill with sean connery- set in WW2 but not really about war

Dont you think many of this movies are just to match"Hollywood" with a patetic theme like The Green Berets.
When that is said i did like Apocalypse Now Platoon and Deer Hunter.
Other movies i like is Schindler's List ,Killing Fields,
Der Untergang, and the old Paths of Glory.
But the reason i like Das Boot best is that it has no heroes ,no gloria around it,just show in a good way what happends to you in situations like that without any bullshit

I did forgett the sniper one, thats a good one, spesially the opening scenes from Stalingrad.
Another one that is very good made-up if you think about the war effects made on film is Menphis Belle.
Its great filming and effects, just love the air scenes
onboard with the crew in the B-17
But again like it most when its so authentic as possible

war films
liked memphis belle too, thought harry connick jr played the gormless pilot quite well.. saw the film actually called "stalingrad" the other night on TV- not bad...might have been the same director as Das boot(wolfgang peterson?) The very long engagement with audry tatou, and the recent film where they played football in no mans line 1915-forgot the name- thought the thin red line was pretty shite

Apocalyps now, Full metal jacket.
I also liked Born on the 4th of july. More for the change he`s going through.
And one of my favorites Hamburger Hill. Fighting over a mountain with big losses and once they captured it they had to leave the place again.

Best war movie ?
I think sometimes American(Hollywood) movies such as Saving Private Ryan, almost always have a surrealistic hero. Stalingrad, like Das Boot, illustrate more the horrific conditions of soldiers during war.
In a way its get you start thinking and you dont feel to good afther seeing this movies.
Its very realistic in a way
Think Stalingrad was a Swedish/German prosject

Good thread Petter.
I would recommend,
Come and See: Directed by Elem Klimov
Set During WW11 in Belarus. The film follows the fortunes of a young boy caught up in the war against the Germans. Its one of the most horrifying and brutal films I have ever seen or am ever likely to see… Not for the faint hearted…
Grim.
Not one to take your GF to see I promise…

In my collection I do have a large collection of war films from all sides of most conflicts!
Some of the best have been posted already. But the one I recommend which hasn't as yet is a Korean film called "Brotherhood". An excellent glimpse at the Korean war from an South korean point of view.
Post more when i get my brain in gear!

I know that it is not a movie but Band of Brothers is an excellent TV mini series.

Hamburger Hill I thought was a good film to show the pointless-ness of war and some battles in the Vietnam war in particular.
And who can forget "Escape to Victory". The best war film that Stallone has ever been in!? Though John Warks moustache was a bit of hammy actor!

Das boot was great.
Another great one was We were Soldiers! Very realistic and I thought Mel Gibson was great and Sam Elliot was one of the best Sgt Majors ever on film.
Kelly's heroes, Guns of Navarone, All quiet on the Western Front and the Devil's Brigade are also favorites.

Deer Hunter is the one for me. Really powerful film, with proper characters that you actually care about later in the film. The Russian Roulette scenes in it scared the crap out of me when I first watched it.
Another one, oldie this time is Ice Cold in Alex. Always remembered for the classic scene at the end that was later immortalised in the beer ad, but also a great film.
