movies-comedies

52 hours on planes during last week had me musing the other day that I don't really go to see comedies as such anymore.....sure I'll catch the new Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler movie on a plane (one of each this week actually).....or buy a $2 DVD in LOS.......but I do not pay to see these films at the box office as there is not much more there than the odd wise ass comment..and no real need for a large screen..."small" films I guess I would call them

Got me thinking about what is really funy to me in cinema and I realised it is not the comedy genre where I get my laughs but more in serious film with real wit.....and possibly also the kind of ridiculous violence and juxtaposition (irony) in settings.......(ie Kill Bill where a soccer mom and Uma are knife fighting it out in a kitchen and the daughter comes in so they stop and make mommy style luvvy duvvy conversation with her)....

or...where a guy inadvertently has his head shot off by someone who doesn't mean to do it and is just waving a gun around or something (sticking to the Tarantino style).....am I a sick man???....

Or perhaps it is just a really offbeat line by someone in a serious film that has real portent....you know the kind of thing Bill Murray or Ray Winstone may deliver....

Are films meant to be comedies anymore or just funny here and there????.....heck there are no more "Life of Brian's" or classics as such to my knowledge....where you really are ROTFLMAO for the whole film.....

Am I missing some great new films????........anyone have any new or classic ROTFLMOA films they'd like to share????

I find too many recent comedies seem forced to have sugar sweet themes added onto them..

Of course it depends what you find funny.. Its lowbrow (but hey so am I) but I bet I will laugh non stop for the jackass movie..

Want to hunt down a DVD copy of nacho libre.. Jack black tends to crack me up.. Very much a new belushi.. And I think I saw there is a borat movie out and sacha cohen handles that play it by ear seat of the pants comedy moments that I cant help but laugh at..

But of those 3 2 are more live slapstick etc than 'movies' with a story..

On TV the other night was the life aquatic.. Seen it before on DVD but its just super bizarre... I was laughing all through it but the people I was with were just like WTF.. Whats funny about a 3 legged dog !! Or a guy singing Bowie in portugese.. I guess I have an odd placed funny bone.

Had the same reactions about one of my all time favourite films (Kubricks Dr Strangelove).. To me laughing at cold war insanity (and the superb players in sellers, george c scott, slim pickins, etc) seems natural.. People I show that film to either love it or just wonder why I am laughing.

The last Jackass movie was as funny as a very funny thing. The Simpsons always makes me laugh and even total tat like American Pie has me giggling.

I think it probably comes from watching most of my movies and TV with my son, so we have been laughing at the same things for years and I still have that juvenile sense of what's funny.

All the arty farty Monty Python stuff or anything pretensiously clever you can keep. Don't make me think, make me laugh.

Steve, how can you say that? Life of Brian is without doubt my fav funny movie ever! So many classic moments...just try and watch the stoning scene without laughing.

I find the trouble with funny and movies in general that you like is that you remember so much about them so need years in between viewings, and there is not really enough good ones to fill the gaps. i don't like most of the recent hollywood stuff, there's only so many college type films I can sit through (american pie, road trip etc..). Though I do like a few such as Old Skool, Meet the Parents...but they just end up being overdone like Scary Movie 4, American Pie 3 and on... they just aren't different enough from each other to be funny.

I tend to go back to older films when I want a funny movie, love Woody Allens stuff - have most on dvd, smart as hell but loads of slaptick to go with it

Thinking about it I think I'd rather watch a laurel and hardy or chaplin film than the latest ben stiller.

I don't think that there is any true comedy films being made by Hollywood recently, apart from the Sandler/Ferrel/Fat pack films. These are only being given the go-ahead becuase they are cheap and make alot of money in return. I thought 40 yr old virgin, wedding crashers and most Sandler/Schneider films funny, but not laugh out-loud funny except in the odd gag.

I don't think 'films' like Jackass or dirty sanchez are comedy films, there are just films of twats hurting themselves. But they are very cheap to produce and have a very high profit ratio. Thats why there are going to be alot of more of these made until someone famous from the a group kills themselves.

What I see as a major reason for the lack of funny films along with the above mentioned "Must have a moral" problem, is that they can't be just a comedy no more. They have to be a "rom-com", or a black comedy (i.e not funny!) or a comedy sci-fi etc etc.

Two of the highest rated comedies of recent years I thought were not funny at all. I thought "Sideways" was a good film about a man going through a pre-marrige/mid-life crisis and his mate who is so **** about AMerican wine. But it wasn't funny! Then there was "Lost in Transliation". Which I thought was a film about a lost lonely man in Japan who meets a young bored newly-married girl and has a great time, then at the end regreats not shagging her! But I never realised that is was meant to be a comedy!

Still, I am a bit strange! So maybe some people will make budweiser geizer's while watching them!

I watched both Lost in Translation and Sideways.. I didnt think either were supposed to be comedies (sure may have had some moments but not a comedy more incedental in the story).. Were they ??

I acually quite enjoyed Sideways.. Dit different from the norm Hollywierd productions..

AS to the new Jackass Movie well I havent seen it yetr.. As you say cost 11 mil to make and grossed much more than that already.. massive returns once DVD sales etc roll in.. But I am infantile enough to admit that I laugh my ass of at them.. Crazy bastards doing juvanile things.. But it makes me laugh..

I admit to not watching them all, but what I have seen (very little) of any Monty Python sketch has not made me laugh: 'that's not a fish, it's a bus' type humour will never do it for me.

I don't even mind student humour, The Young Ones used to slay me, I just find MP a bit (a lot) 'look at us, are'nt we clever'. Not my idea of funny.

For some reason, all the comedy from that era leaves me cold. Laurel and Hardy I can still watch and laugh at though, so I'm not a total lost cause.

LIL,
we have done many immoral things while in each others compnay but i can honestly say ive never been more disappointed. Jack Black!! the guy is the biggest hack i have ever seen. i can even stomach to see him on the screen anymore

and i quite enjoy movies like lost in translation and sideways. i think they only get better the more you watch them

for me, back in the day, nothing beat chevy chase with Fletch and the 1st few Vacation series.

i think the hardest i have ever laughed at a movie in a theater was Something About Mary

Yeah I agree about their actual tv shows, but their films are great, Holy Grail is pretty good, but defo recommend watching LoB, there are a few mad moments in it but generally it's just hilarious all the way through.

One of the films I would pay money to watch again at the cinema, and would absolutely love to be able to watch it for the first time again.

For Mel Brooks, I preferred High Anxiety...classic film, the film that probably made me laugh the hardest at any single scene in a film

Animal house.... that's a fcuking funny film!

I always thought that the Life of Brian very funny, but the other Python films a bit rubbish. I mean when you are 14/15, the holy grail is very funny with the knights of nee and shrubbery's. But when you get older, it loses it appeal, unlike the classic Brian! The rest are just collections of sketches!

I film that I from time to time take out of my collection to watch, which I piss myself too, but others think is a children's film, is "The Princess Bride". I don't know why, but I think hilarious.

Not a Hollywood film's:

'Love Honour and Obey' is a brillant comedy. A British made film with Jude Law and Ray Winstone. About gangsta'a in London!

'Chopper'. Don't know weather it was meant to be funny but it made me laugh. "Stop stabbing me mate! Look mate, if you keep stabbing im gonna die"

well good discussion boys......

I'm a big Bill Murray fan and really laughed out loud all through "Steve Zizhou's a Life Aquatic" being a diver and a mad keen lover of Jaques Cousteau as a kid......I just love it......I ahve it on DVD......also Rushmore + The Royal Tenenbaums are a classic wry comedies if you haven't seen them........I think that Wes Anderson (maker of all of the above) is a film/comedic genius and THE MAN for modern day off beat comedies.....

also in a little film "school" with Anderson are Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation + Virgin suicides.....both beautiful understated examples of non comedy comedies.....the point I raised in my original post) and Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich + Adaptation.....written by comic genius Andy Kaufman)....Jonze also acted in "Three Kings" another classic comedy

Mel Brooks is a fantastic old school writer/director/producer and Blazing Saddles is one of the best surreal comedies ever......from the farts to the bawdy western genre mining and then busting through the sets into a full scale homo musical set......classic...I own the box set of Mel's movies.....up until the new Producers which is a very funny film (Will Ferrell is very good but somehowbut his original with Gene Wilder(another great comedic actor) is miles better

I think that all of the Python films are ridiculously side splittingly funny.....but none better than "Brian".....it is classic British absurdist school.....as were Spike Miligan, Peter Sellers + Tony Hhhhhancock.......but I too wasn't so fond of the Python TV series .....it was a bit esoteric and too clever by half for me.......too much Gilliam influence IMHO

Did anyone see "the King of Comedy" with Gerry Lewis (not normally a fan) and DeNiro as Rupert Pupkin....... also a great cameo from Sandra Bernhardt plaqying as you guessed it.....an obsessed fan....now that's a knife edge black comedy....

I also like some of the Farrelly bros films and think M26 is right that "something about mary" is the best one......Matt Dillon (not usually a fan...again) shows a great hand for comedy in that one.....and Stiller is the best of those pretty lightweight new comedians I mentioned in my 1st post....

But Hey I am goin' on a little here........seems like there are plenty of good comedies about...just working different forms and nuances within the genre I guess......

Now your mixing your comic genius's..

Andy Kaufman.. (see man on the moon with jim carry) was the oddball guy in taxi who was some very strange in the head surrealist comedian who let his comedy directly into how he lived his life.. After seeing man on the moon I looked up much more about him online.. A deeply wierd / brave / individual human.. But also a bit past strange..

Charlie Kaufman is the also ubsurd script writing for Being Malkavitch, adaption, Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.. All very unusual and smart films with some comedy elements but mostly just very clever but you got to pay attention and have the brain in gear.. Cant coast through in neutral with a belly full of drink and get much out of one of his.

I have a soft spot for some of the old Peter Sellers stuff.. His clowning around in Pink Panther to well just to many to name (the party stays with me)..

woops.....you are absolutely right there LiL....shoot did I say Andy....

But good opportunity to raise Andy....funny little man...funy little comedian man.....well portrayed by Carey (gotta say it again sorry.....don't usually like Carey).....but he was good in both man in the moon and Eternal Sunshine....

think I'll just slide into my Freudian slippers..........55555
