Babel
great thought provoking film.........
3 intertwined stories......one set in Morocco......one in Mexico/San Diego.... and one in downtown Tokyo........
all about families and the brutal impact of reactions/overreactions to occurrences in their lives.........microcosm shedding light on macrocosm in this regard.......
touches on themes of mistaken identities and the overiding force of US Foreign policy on ordinary people.........
It's not particularly an easy ride......filled with the portent of a heavy hammer about to reign down at any second...and it does in parts.....but its a bitter sweet reminder of the joy of life too!!!!!!
Can't really say much about plot lines or happennings etc as that would spoil the experience...but is a beautifully written, shot and acted film (Blanchette + Pitt) with plenty to say about the mess the whole world is in right now......
If you like cinema rather than movies.........it's a must see!!

i didnt really care for it
and whats funny is that when the movie was over, half the theatre kinda just sat there with a weird look on there face, like they couldnt peice it all together
i thought it was too disjointed
i much preferred Syrianna, which had different stories btu with tie-ins

i do agree i did like its cinematic qualities:
the way he shot certain scenes
but sometimes i feel that directors and producers get hell bent on making the movie they want vs. the movie people want to see. which is what I think Deniro did with The Good Shephard

yeah but when hollywood makes the films it thinks people want to see you get 'Batman & Robin'.
Not seen Babel yet but its on the list. Syrianna was real hard work and i'm still not sure I understand the whole thing. Got a lot of time for Pitt and Clooney, they are some of the only actors around today who have the star quality of 50's movie stars but damn they can act too.

agree with your comments above boys.........but don't necessarlily see them as negatives........and I can understand the draining/perplexing effect it has on people.....I sure as hell didn't leave the cinema until after all of the credits had rolled..........as did most people in the viewing I was at......but some people stood and clapped at the end of the film too.....I found this puzzling.......and thought it was an inappropriate response to what they had just been shown......
I have no problem with an auteur presenting me with HIS story rather than one he would think that I among the masses would want to see........I love original cinema and all it stands for..but anyone going along expecting to see a Hollywood style drama with Blanchette + Pitt would I am sure be disappointed.....
For me the Japanes story was the standout......that deaf mute girl and her thirst for reassurance and love had my heart out on my sleeve eevry moment she was on screen........and I also really loved the japper disco scene shot from her perspective......
I found the whole experience really rich and rewarding.........and it was probably the most emotionally I have been attached to a film in a very long time.......
Funny I thought of Syriana too straight afterwards and will be watching it again tonight.........its been long enough now since I saw it in the cinema........

Agree with you 100% about Pitt and Clooney.. Somewhow Clooney just oozes that kind of vegas rat pack cool.. And Pitt who I thought was just a pretty boy actor when he started out has taken some of the most interesting roles and tough work. Both of them are on my must see list in pretty much any project.
Not seen Babel yet but it sounds like I would enjoy it.. Also looking forward to the second Capote film (not the Phillip Seymour Hoffman one) as the clips I have seen look interesting.
As for the 'cinematic' part.. I find some movies can be enjoyed purely based on the grandeur and scale that modern directors have a hard time capturing.. I can rewatch Sergio Leones Good Bad and Ugly simply to see the camera work of sweeping sun scorched earth and then the hard bitten close ups, or the grandeur of Leans Lawrence. Hell I even rewatched 7 years in Tibet recently (where Pitt puts on a decidedly dodgy German accent) simply as the location imagery around tibet was so incredible. To me thats cinema and that grandeur is missing in so much drivel thats churned out.

wow!!! you just zeroed in on what i loved about the movie and also found bewildering!!
The Japanese Tale
I literally found myself staring at the screen during the disco scene and commenting to myself how fantastic that whole take was
and i loved the japanese girl's character but just found that it was "pushed" into the movie by one trivial connection

well I am sure the Morrocan kids thought.....(or more importantly didn't think I guess).....shooting a gun in the mountains was a trivial act too...but look at the consequences.........
I think that was one of the major themes of the film M26.........that trivial actions can have major international consequences if misinterpreted.......

so i watched Babel again on the plane
absolutely loved it
the direction was absolutely incredible
that disco scene is one of the best scenes, visually, i have ever seen
and to add that September remix was phenomenal
i do have to say that i thought Rinko Kikuchi, who played the Japanese girl, Chieko, should have won the Oscar. i just couldnt get over how she displayed her emotions on her face. it is basically what a deaf mute person would do.
the only word that comes to mind is angst!!
i also loved the closing scene where the dad is hugging her on the balcony
the contrast of her naked body against the Tokyo skyline with the music being so poignant
hows that for a reversal of opinion

Good film, I give it 7.5 out of 10
Have you seen "Little Children" yet? Another really interesting adult drama.

I think it is one of those films where you have to see it twice to fully appreciate. It's baffling for the first hour because you have no idea where the story line is or where it is going. Slowly (for me anyway) things started coming together...
Also, there was a non-chronological aspect to be dealt with... A good movie, no doubt... but, it could not be Oscar material in the end for any one actor/ress as none had enough film time to carry the picture or support it... although the Japanese girl certainly went out on a limb on this one assuming she was famous in the first place (maybe in Japan?)... I have not seen her before.
