Martin Scorses finally wins Oscar
Definitely long overdue. Funny thing is that the Departed probably won't go down as one of his best movies, but that's often the case with the Oscars. Just glad they didn't give the Best Picture Oscar to Little Miss Sunshine. Liked the movie but I don't think it deserved a nomination.

Not his best, but a very good movie, nonetheless!
It's a good thing that the resident Board critics weren't handing out the Oscars, or he would have come up empty-handed, since that movie really got raked over the coals here in the movie section.

Definately overdude.. But to not get one for Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver etc and then to get one for the Departed (enjoyable but a bit overhyped personally) is a bit bass ackwards..
Anyway finally got one !!

Little Miss Sunshine was boringly predictable and not funny. I'm at a lost as to why this film received any attention what so ever.
Departed, will be watching the hd-dvd shortly

Glad this won. It makes the truth about global warming so painfully obvious, you have to start taking action even on a personal level. I now try and do my little bit.

The Oscars have become more for your body of work in the last few years
Funny thing is I didnt really care for The Departed but was rooting for it

I guess I have a fundamental problem with a remake being given the Best Picture award. Though I did like 'The Departed' as a movie.
It was a pretty poor year for Best Picture in my opinion. Probably 'The Prestige' was my favourite film of the past year. A cracking good yarn. I thought 'United 93' was brilliant, and 'Children of Men' rounded out my Top 3.
Marty finally gets the Oscar. What a body of work he has: Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, New York New York, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Last Temptation of Christ, Casino, are all faves of mine.

Agree with IJ and LIL. Departed was OK but not a winner. Defo his other body of work should have got the nod instead.

Guess that explains why I didn't like Little Miss Sunshine. But really, what was good about it? Was any part clever or funny? Just a wanna-be low budget art house film.

I definitely agree that Scorcese's win was more for the body of his work than anything else. My fav film from last year was definitely Children of Men followed by Pan's Labyrinth. Both of these were way too dark to win Oscars for Best Picture but they should have been nominated anyway. I'm pretty sure people will be talking about these two movies in years to come wheras quite the opposite will be true of Little Miss Sunshine.

I think this movie is a case of a nice, light-hearted fun movie with a few good points to make, that gets killed by the hype once it attracts some notice, which creates unduly high expectations.. I saw it the day it was released just because I happened to go to the theater that day, and picked it because I didn't like the other choices, knowing nothing about it.
It is no pic of the year in a million years, and it was really an overreach to give it a nomination. But the kid was cute, the old man was a wacky, lovable old coot, it poked fun at a lot of established institutions and stereotypes, it held my interest throughout, and in the end, it was just a good light-hearted spoof and not to be taken so seriously. I laughed.

Was it just me or did the whole night turn into an Al Gore love-fest.
Started when they introduced him as Vice-President and not former Vice-President.
Something about that guy that just bugs me.
Glad to see Forrest Whittiker win though, fantastic actor.

Wow, I totally forgot about that. Who would have thought when that movie first came out that two people who starred in it -- Forest Whitaker and Sean Penn -- would go on to win Oscars for Best Actor?
I've been a big fan of Forest Whitaker for a long time. He's put together a stellar body of work. Playing Carlie Parker in Bird, Ghost Dog, just to name two. Even though he was brilliant in The Last King of Scotland you can almost look at his Oscar as a nod to the work he's done throughout his career. He definitely deserved it any way you look at it. One good thing to see is that the Oscars aren't just recognizing the super glamorous types like Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio for Oscars. With Whitaker this year and Philip Seymour Hoffman last year, they've gone out of their way to recognize super talented actors who don't necessarily sell a lot of tabloids.

Funny thing, I watched Interview with a Vampire again on the weekend and I never realized the little girl was Kirsten Dunst....Feel like a pervert now for the thoughts I've had of her.

I really liked Marie Antoinette and thought it worked very well in a kinda post punk dance party superficial but potent kinda way.........
Most interesting things about Marie Antoinette for me were.
the casting of Jason Schwartzman....he will be a best actor acadamy award winner one day.......plays a very quirky, messed up but stylised Louis
Kirsten Dunce's playing of MA as an adolescent party girl with no ill will toward anybody.......if there is truth in this (it based on the book by Lady Antonia Fraser.....Pintas wife) she was a largely maligned historical character...
the choice of the music which was largely from the British post punk/new wave era with Gang of 4, Bow Wow Wow, The Cure, New Order, Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshhes etc mixed in with classical.............
The sheer opulence, lavishness and drama of the sets and costumes.......and the directio of Sophia Coppola..........she too is a great talent!!!
