I finally caught this movie last night. I'm really surprised that it hasn't done better at the box office here in the US. I thought all of the fanboys who flocked to see 300 would be all over Grindhouse but it turns out they preferred to check out Will Ferrell in Blades of Glory instead. Still I thought this was well worth the 3 hour investment in time to see. The zombie movie Planet Terror really has nothing we haven't seen in any other zombie movie but it was still a fun ride. Tarantino's contribution was rather talky and loaded with pop culture references that anyone under 30 would undoubtedly miss, but the ladies were hot and once the action gets going it was a lot of fun too. And the fake movie trailers might be the best part of the whole thing -- Cheech Marin as a gun-toting Roman Catholic priest, I'd pay to see that!
watched the trailers recently and they look fun if a little daft. I like the concept of the Grindhouse movie theatre being reborn but it does seem a little self indulgent by Rodriguez and Tarantino. I get the references but didn't know much about grindhouse flicks and I think the mainstream public will not buy into it this time - looks one for fans only.
The official DVD should be well worth the money if for no other reason that it's supposed to include footage from the "missing reels" that you don't get to see in the theatre version. In Planet Terror about half of Rose McGowan and Freddy Rodriguez's love scene is missing while in Death Proof the scene where Kurt Russell gets a lap dance from Vanessa Ferlito is missing completely. There are also some action scenes that look a bit disjointed as well. I think the overseas (i.e. everywhere except North America) plan is to split the movies up and release them separately. Death Proof is being entered in the Cannes film festival on its own for example.
