just saw the new David Cronenberg film "Eastern Promises"

It's a story about the russian mafia in London and stars Naomi Watts as a midwife who delivers a baby whose teenage Ukrainian mother dies during childbirth and her quest to find the family based on a diary she finds in the mothers handbag.....this leads her to:

Vigo Mortenson as a tough upcoming Russian mobster with aspirations

french actor Vincent Callis who plays the slimey/weak son of the mob boss....

and german actor Armin Mueller-Stahl spine chiilingly portraying the aging mobster

Nice, gritty well told story with a few twists and turns....well acted and directed and well worth a look...........great mobster knife fight in the Finsbury Park (London) Russian Bath house ......

I'd give it 4 stars

Saw it about a month ago. Good story, good action. Viggo was excellent, Naomi was good, but a bit annoying. The actors who played the Russian were very good. A solid 3 stars, maybe 3.5 stars. It is a little better than Kingdom or In the Valley of Elah, but, IMHO, We Own The Night is the best of the bunch.

Haven't seen Gone Baby Gone yet, though.

i made a rare trip to the cinema yesterday to see this. usually i download from internet, but thought this would be such a good film would be worth the trip.
i think the potential was there for a great film..good director..filmed in london all about russian mafia. was very dissapointed. i think the story just didnt go anywhere. when it finished and the lights went up most people were looking at each other thinking.."is that it"?
fight scene in the turkish baths was good..apart from that not very good!

I was a bit disappointed by this as well. I just wasn't sold on the "Kirrili" character at all - he proved to be a big distraction for me. Pulpish ending....But Naomi was lovely as usual.
