Control

anyone else seen this film as yet....I saw it on the weekend and whilst it is hard going subject matter (epilepsy/depression/suicide) it is to me a fabulous piece of work in the arthouse genre and even then probably mostly for fans of "Joy Divison" the seminal rock band of the late 70's/start of the 80's which morphed into "New Order" after the death of lead singer Ian Curtis

The story is based on the book (Touching from a Distance) by Curtis' wife of the time Deborah and centres on their relationship as kids through to marriage and the birth of their child whilst the band formed and went on to become one of the most potent in the history of English music....and the problems which arose with his marital problems/epilepsy/depression and the eventual stardom of Curtis

Directed by Antoin Corbijn who was a NME photographer it is a wonderful B+W homage to Curtis and the band and a striking ist time film...he also co-wrote and co-produced

For me JD was simply the most important band in my life and Curtis was a genius......his death was a defining moment in my life and one of those events that stick in your mind forever like the death of JFK,9/11 etc

If you are a fan go and see it...the soundtrack is a killer BTW

Not seen it yet but I'm away this week so should get the chance to catch it.

That whole period was a major part of my formative years; Joy Division, Bauhaus, Echo and the Bunnymen. That's the stuff that really had an impact on me but I can't honestly say that I was the biggest Joy Division fan, they were just part of the times.

I've said before that I used to do the stocktaking at the Hacienda, and Factory had an office there until the day it closed. It always felt like a special place.

When you listen now, Transmission and Love Will Tear us Apart are still brilliant and to my mind that's the sign of fairly special music.

I think Ian Curtis was the same as Kurt Cobain, Michael Hutchence, Manic's Richey and probably Elvis. Tortured souls who failed to recognise their own genius, shame.

I love Docs about musicians and bands and will keep an eye out for this one.

I saw Echo and the Bunnymen a couple years ago and it was a great show. He was still the coolest.

loads of great bands at that time and soon after Steve.....english music just exploded around then.....a quality that was not seen since the sixties with the Beatles + Stones era.....and then another one came along with Britpop in the late 90's (although I don't think Britpop was that great or that relevant to me)

If you are a real music and biography fan and at least like the music of JD Dupree I'm sure you'll apppreciate this one

I was thinking of watching this too. Joy Division was a bit before my time, but after seeing "24hr Party People" and reading some of the reviews of Control, not just Nelce's, this seems a very intellegent and well performed bio-pic.
