Top Gear vs. Fifth Gear
As the US TV offering has ground to a halt, I've been exploring more of the UK's offerings.
Top Gear is a brilliant show. Beautifully shot. Very entertaining. Some of the stuff they come up with is hilarious. Like car football or some of their adventures/challenges. The arctic episode in HD is really awesome.
Fifth Gear is bla. The hosts are all lame. One of the hosts is a woman, and upon seeing that I realized I am not going to believe anything she said about the car. I guess I'm decidedly very sexist about car reviewers.

While I agree about the final assessment I think the female presenter you mean is Vicky butler henderson..
I too thought, what !! a chick doing car stuff !! But she is a genuine petrol head and can actually drive (she used to be a racing driver semi pro I think).. Plus she got her presenter break on (wait for it) Top Gear !!

Fith gear only came about because the BBC sold the rights to Top GEar, to channel five back when they thought idea was dead.
BUt they bought it back a few years later, when the format totally changed. Its not so much about 'real' cars anymore, but about top end cars (how many of the normal people can afford £40,000+ for a car?) and how Jeremy Clarkson can get himself on screen the most. Then last years hamster crash raised the shows profile even further.
Top gear is now an enterainment show, rather than a car show.

Agree that they have moved away from being general to the more exotic.. Not sure thats too bad a thing tho, I dont really want to see a consumer review of a toyota corolla I would much rather hear about the bugatti veyron..
I think Tiff has been axed tho and he was a star.. Loved his bits and the super slimy second hand car salesman Quentin whatever.. All played better roles than the newer breed of presenters..

For the super rich I can see why the super cars are of interest!
Its the car version of "MTV's Cribs!
Tiff Needel, Quentin Wilson and the VBH, were the Top GEar presenters when it was on BBC before. I always thought Quentin Wilson looks like a vulture out of the Disney Robin Hood cartoon movie.
I think Clarkson and Richard HAmmond are good presenters, but the first guy they had when it came back was terrible. Although he looked a little like me. James May is the kind-of opposite to them two, laid back. HIs series with Oz Clarke, about wine, is very very funny. It show you how pretencoius the whole "Wine World" is!

Well, I think this Season of Top Gear has been some of the best TV ever. Really great stuff to watch, even the stuff I usually think is boring they present in a very entertaining way.
To be honest S1show I dont wanna watch 10 minutes on family cars or estates, I only wanna see the dream cars being hammered around a track/road.
Fifth gear is "meh", Sef is right about Vicky Butler she is pretty cool and i have a lot of respect for Tiff Needel (or Tiffany Dell as I used to hear it when i was 10 yrs old) but the show suffers without Clarkson. I didnt know until recently when he was on Chris Moyles show on Radio 1 that he writes the WHOLE show including James May and Hammonds lines.
Been some really interesting stuff the last coupe of Eps, Hamster trying to drive a real F1 car was very revealing as to just what an awesome pice of machinery they are.

You are right on presenters. They have a really good balance of personalities. Clarkson on his own would be too much of an a$$.
Makes me wish I had my own airfield to play on
Will have to check out Wine World. It's funny to watch May.

How dare you disagree with me!!!!
I think I may of put it badly, but the show isn't a car show anymore. Its a enterainment show. THey enterain you in their cars, rather than tell you about the cars.
But what do I know? I dont even drive!

Sorry Chris, the programme is not called "Wine World". I was saying that was the world that he brings him (MAy) into.
The programme is called "Big wine Adventure". Its just finished the second series here in the UK, which was them touring the USA. The first series, Oz Clarke trying to get May to learn and appricate good wines. It was mainly in FRance, I think (was in Los when it was on).

Thanks. I googled, then wiki'ed, then NZBed, and she's in the queue now.
Why is in the UK then can't seem to do more than 6 or 8 episodes of something per year. With Dr. Who at 12 + 1 special they have actors dropping like flies complaining it is too demanding. What gives?

I too am a big fan of Top Gear,i am really interested in the technology side of those exotic machines. They seem to inherit some of the cutting edge gizmos from F1,of which some are eventually passed down to the run of the mill street hacks. So there is some link to the everyday car.
I`m not up to date with the presenters names, but, one of them got to drive a top fuel drag car and had a high speed crash and was in a bad way in hospital last i heard.Anyone know what happened to him?

Really like top gear...... loath 5th Gear....it is very poor imitation indeed
Clarkson is a fantastic presenter and it works either way whether you like him or loathe him....and agre that he is well balanced by the hamster and may....they get plenty back on him
my biggest gripe with Top Gear is they are too kind on English cars and too harsh on German cars....guess they are just being parochial but it does make me laugh when they are comparing a jag an M6 and a CLS55 and come out with an underpowered jag as the best.....because its well.....a jag.....Knobs

Richard Hammond or Hamster is recovering well and is back on T.V. His autobiography telling the story is now in the shops here in the U.K.

I am 90% sure I will have long way down in the post as a Christmas present.. Otherwise it will be a download or buy the day after.. So love those shows and just get me looking at the atlas thinking (Our siberia run has kind of stalled at present)..
Have the Dakar Boorman one already.. Good viewing but just not quite as good.

Sure to be a "buck" in the publicity he got from that.As far as i know it was totally driver error (inexperience) that was the cause.(Edit, saw the video,it was a blowout in the front right tyre that caused the incident,my apologies).
Oh well, thats his claim to fame/fortune.

Top Gear is pure entertainment these days. Even my parents watch it yet they have no interest in cars whatsoever.
The Reliant Robin Shuttle was a classic>>>
YouTube - Top Gear - Relient Robin Space Shuttle
...and the one where they built 3 superstreched cars and drove them into Central London knocking over bollards and holding up the traffic...and Clarksons' snapped in half
